" Why should patients be kept financially unharmed from what is now a preventable hospitalization, thanks to a vaccine that the government paid for and made available free of charge? "

Health insurers could do more to encourage vaccination, including letting the unvaccinated foot their bills.

Government rationing is slowing the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines by diminishing the incentives for speed and security on the part of manufacturers and retailers. In some, cases it is costing lives by allowing vaccines to spoil.

" If the government wants to hand out vaccines to whoever it thinks should go first, ok, let it buy the vaccine on the free market, on budget, paid by visible taxes, and hand it out. But it should not forbid anyone who wants it from paying for it, nor forbid vaccine makers from selling to whoever wants it, to artificially keep the price down and hide the immense transfer in its actions. Looked at for what it is -- only and entirely a ban on private transactions -- it is amazing that we meekly put up with such wholesale trampling of our rights to transact, to property, and to pursue our own health. In the most important market in the world right now, vaccine producers may only sell to governments."

Part 2: The cost of perfection. The vaccine was invented in a weekend, available in February. In free market land, we would not have had a pandemic, or a recession. 284 thousand people would be alive today. That is the cost of FDA "protection."

Taxpayer-funding for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has exploded. In addition to combating dangerous infectious diseases like HIV and malaria, the CDC now also studies alcohol and to***co use, athletic injuries, traffic accidents, and gun violence.

Spending nearly 14 times as much on the CDC as we did in 1987 did not, apparently, help the agency combat the biggest disease threat America has faced in a century.

"So what should America do besides praying for a summer miracle? Start thinking of the answer not as a binary choice between "lockdown" or "liberation." We need more targeted approaches to contain high-risk activities and protect high-risk populations while giving ordinary Americans more — not less — freedom to figure out when and how they want to return to work and some semblance of normal life."

'Lockdown' or 'liberation' are not the only options

Higher prices align what people demand with what others supply, and legal actions against price hikes cause shortages, sometimes life-threatening ones.

While there is as yet little hope of doing a retrospective analysis of existing mandates, giving a reality check to any new proposed requirements would be a big step forward.

"To be clear I’m not suggesting government do nothing to flatten the COVID curve. But as those who are going to claim those in power should have seen COVID coming, those in power need to see the potentially longer lasting damage of their actions to our livelihoods and our civil liberties."

Are you beginning to think the cure could be far more deadly than the disease?
