Thanks for the shout out United Way of Frederick County! We are honored to partner with you!

This National Financial Awareness Day, we’re shining a light on our Budget Coach program and the volunteers who make it possible.

Through this program, local ALICE households are paired one-on-one with a trusted Budget Coach who serves as a financial cheerleader, helping them create a budget, make informed financial decisions, connect with resources, and work toward their goals. Those goals might include paying down debt, building savings, purchasing a car, becoming a homeowner, or going back to school.

As the need for financial literacy support grows, we need more Budget Coaches!

You don’t have to be a financial expert. You do need to be compassionate, trustworthy, organized, and willing to support someone as they work toward their goals. Training is provided, and the commitment averages just 2–4 hours per month, with flexibility in when and how you meet.

A special shout-out to our partner Housing Frederick, who helps make this program possible and allows us to connect more families with the support they need to build a stronger financial future.

If you believe everyone deserves the opportunity to build a stronger financial future, you could be the person who helps make that possible for a local family.

Collaboration Creates Opportunity

Tonight, Housing Frederick hosted a First-Time Homebuyers Funding Class—and it was a powerful reminder of what collaboration can accomplish.

Our attendees heard directly from an incredible panel of community partners:

🏠 Derby Swanson, Habitat for Humanity Frederick
🏡 Steven Rose, City of Frederick Housing Counselor
🏘️ Nouralahi Ibrahim, Housing Programs Coordinator, Frederick County Government
🤝 Joyce Kwamena-Poh, Director of Operations, United Way of Frederick County
💰 Lisa Tyler, Mortgage Loan Officer, PNC Bank

Together, they shared information about homebuyer assistance programs that can provide $7,500, $18,000, $20,000, and even $25,000 toward purchasing a home. Some of these resources can be combined, creating an even greater impact for a future homeowner. There are also programs offering zero-interest loans and zero dollars down.

This is what collaboration looks like.

When organizations come together, share their expertise, and connect people with resources, we create pathways to homeownership that may have otherwise seemed out of reach.

Thank you to our partners for your partnership, your expertise, and most importantly, your time. Your willingness to show up and share your knowledge makes a difference.

Making a difference—one homebuyer at a time. 🏡

Honored to attend the Graduation of Project Guide, the summer cohort of Empowered to Live, Inc. These young people spent 8 weeks learning about the trades, visiting potential employers, and passing numerous construction certificate exams. We have supported the program by providing financial education in the life-skills track for 5 years. It is so rewarding to celebrate the progress of these future leaders.

🏗️ UPDATE: Westridge Square

Plans for the former Burlington property at Westridge Square have evolved, and as of now, this is the most up-to-date proposal for the site.

MCB Real Estate is proposing the redevelopment of the former Burlington space into 119 townhomes, bringing a significant new residential component to the Golden Mile.

As with any project of this size, plans can change as things move through the process. The Golden Mile Alliance will continue to keep the community updated as we learn more about what’s ahead for Westridge Square.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Happy to spend our morning teaching the summer cohort of Empowered to Live! We reviewed choices: banks or credit unions, credit & debit cards short term and long term savings- and many other financial devious that need to be made for the future. Congratulations to our colleague and founder Tiffany Green for establishing a program that opens doors to career paths for youth ages 16 to 24. This was our 4th summer of partnering.

Some days perfectly capture who we are.

In one day, Housing Frederick trained a new budget coach with United Way, taught a workshop on cutting household expenses at a partner location, met with a donor investing in our mission, joined local leaders to discuss housing policy, and hosted a Housing Policy Seminar for community candidates.

Every step reflected our mission:
🤝 Collaborate by strengthening partnerships and building community capacity.
📣 Advocate for policies that expand housing opportunities.
📚 Educate individuals, leaders, and future decision-makers with the knowledge to create lasting change.

This is how we build a stronger Frederick County—together.
