The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW), , and the co-editors, Nadia de Matos Barros and Paulo Celso de Oliveira Pankararu, invite you to a special virtual event celebrating the launch of IPB’s new publication, Indigenous Lawyering Practices in Brazil. This event will be of particular interest to Indigenous lawyers in other countries and advocates allied with Indigenous legal struggles.

The publication's authors and notable guests, including lawyers and scholars from the Indigenous rights community, will explore the book's themes in greater depth and discuss the broader implications for Indigenous legal struggles in Brazil and worldwide. We will leave time for discussion after each panel, and hope to hear from attendees about their experiences working on these topics in other jurisdictions.

Topics will include:
🔥 Indigenous Lawyering and Resistance, including the criminalization and other legal instruments used against Indigenous environmental defenders.
🏔️ Access to Justice and Extractive Industries
⚖️ Indigenous Knowledge and Autonomous Legal Systems

ELAW Executive Director Dr. Lalanath de Silva meets with law students in Sri Lanka!

𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗜: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘄

A huge thank you to Dr. Lalanath de Silva for graciously sharing his expertise and time with our delegation. As a pioneering figure in environmental jurisprudence and a distinguished alumnus of Sri Lanka Law College, Dr. de Silva provided invaluable perspectives on the evolution of public interest litigation and global environmental governance.
We also extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Asanga Gunawansa, President's Counsel, for his hospitality in accommodating us within his chambers. Learning from luminaries of such distinction is central to our mission of bridging the gap between academic theory and the sophisticated expertise required for a career in environmental law.

Stay tuned as we continue the journey with the next phases of EcoNexus.

Last week, more than 100 ELAW partners from 45 countries gathered in Bangkok for the 2026 ELAW Annual Meeting.

“The meeting is a wonderful opportunity for the ELAW network to collaborate and learn from lawyers facing similar issues,” says Sor.Rattanamanee Polkla, Executive Director of the Community Resource Centre Foundation - มูลนิธิศูนย์ข้อมูลชุมชน , which co-hosted the meeting. “This year, it feels especially important to host the meeting in Thailand, as we are facing so many difficult challenges in our work to advance justice for communities and protect the environment. Transboundary mining issues have emerged as a particular challenge for many within the network and the region, and we hope to join hands with advocates across borders to ensure that projects fully consider the impacts on human rights and vital ecosystems. Without a healthy environment, we cannot live.”

Communities living in the proposed location of the Samarco Long Term Project, a massive iron ore mining complex, have already suffered the biggest socio-environmental crime in Brazil, the Mariana Dam Collapse, and have not yet had full reparations.

Since last year, ELAW has been providing technical support to help the court understand what is at stake as it considers Samarco’s expansion plans– outlining the potential issues with planned iron ore mining activities, new tailings storage structures, and the climate risks associated with allowing this project to continue and expand its operations.

Now, Instituto Cordilheira has filed an appeal to uphold an earlier decision to halt the project until it properly complies with environmental and human rights laws and considers climate impacts.
