All wins are worth celebrating and Lane County Government’s HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) database reports three consecutive years of modest decreases in the number of people experiencing homelessness in our local community. After 5 years of increases, this is a signal of the progress made. Let’s continue our push to make homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring.

A cross-sector group of partners collaborated to launch this pilot program to keep Downtown Eugene clean and safe, with the added benefit of workforce development and additional help with resource connections. With over 500 positive connections already, we're excited to see this program grow!

Chris Elliott didn’t start in this work through a direct connection to homelessness. She joined because she saw a need for more people to step in and help.

As the owner of Elliott Image Media Production, Chris has spent decades honing her craft, creating award-winning video work (and this PSA!). Now, she’s using those skills to help tell the story of our coalition.

She says, “If I can use my experience to bring back hope and get others involved, it feels like a great way to help.”

Housing stability can come in stages. For Neal, it took years…first to get a mental health diagnosis, then to get the right treatment, so that he could find housing, work—and ultimately, a long-term place to call home. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing more about what’s really driving homelessness in our community.

If there’s one thing we hope people take away, it’s this:

👉 The biggest driver is a lack of enough housing.

When housing is limited and expensive, more people become at risk and more people fall through.

That doesn’t mean other factors don’t matter. But it does help us focus on where solutions can have the biggest impact. This issue is complex. And it affects all of us.

But it’s also something we can work on, together.

Let’s break this down simply:
When there aren’t enough homes for the number of people who need them:

➡️ Rent goes up
➡️ Fewer options are available
➡️ More people become at risk
➡️ More people experience homelessness

This is why housing supply is such an important part of the conversation. It’s not
always visible but it has a big impact.
