How many times have we been in spaces with - we’ll say it for you - diabolical white women? They smile and intentionally trip you up? They tell you if you need anything to let them know and then when you do they ignore you or respond with irritation and impatience? They claim to be uplifting your work, your cause, you - and then you find out later they are the very individual who torpedoed you?
We know a fact of our lives as Black women living in the United States, is that more of our undesirable moments will likely be facilitated by a white woman than even their or our male counterparts.
So when we choose to do an event, we try to use another Black woman if we can, but what about an event that requires a hotel component? Then we know we must go mainstream in most markets. And we expect for it to be a stale experience at best and one filled with drama at worst. You don’t expect red carpets or hospitality or even compassion - you simply hope for nondisaster and diminished trama.
But what happens when a venue ‘house’ becomes as Luther Vandross and Dionne Warwick put it ‘a home’ despite the fact that you have to work with a white woman?
That’s exactly the experience we’re having with Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park. The hotel venue for CABWC: The Homecoming! We believe we are having this experience because we are joyfully working with this lady right here: Deena Story.
Meet Deena, the woman behind the compassionate, emotionally safe, and even enjoyable experience of hosting our inaugural national conference for Black women. We’re creating a sanctuary, and we’re doing with the help of - instead of despite - working with a white woman.
As the last session of The Healing Before The Healing series as we head into October and the actual event, we want to give Black women that unbelievable experience of seeing something incredibly healing: a beautiful, loving, professional, kind, collaborative experience building our reverent healing sanctuary to hold this weekend on Oct 16-17 for Black women as we deserve.
Come with your questions, come with your curiosity, it’s even okay to come with your skepticism - just come.
