Why don't they leave?

For survivors of domestic violence, leaving an abusive relationship is rarely a simple decision. In fact, the process of leaving can be one of the most dangerous times for a survivor. Research shows that the risk of severe or lethal violence can increase when an abusive partner feels they are losing control. Abusers may escalate their behavior, using threats, intimidation, or physical violence to maintain power and control.

That’s why leaving requires more than courage—it requires support, resources, and careful safety planning. Every survivor deserves to make decisions about their safety without judgment, and to have access to the support they need.

Instead of asking “Why don’t they leave?”, ask “How can I support them in staying safe?”

Every October, organizations and individuals unite across the country for a national effort to uplift the needs, voices, and experiences of survivors.

Today is National Day of Action in support of the Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act💜

The Crime Victims Fund (CVF) is the primary source of funding for services that support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, trafficking, and other crimes. Yet today, the CVF is dangerously low, putting critical, lifesaving services and victims’ lives at risk.

Communities are already feeling the impact. Programs have been forced to reduce services, lay off staff, and, in some cases, close their doors entirely. Without immediate action, communities will feel less safe, and more survivors will be left without the support they need to heal, rebuild their lives, and get back to work.

The Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act ( ) offers a bipartisan, commonsense solution to stabilize the CVF using non-taxpayer dollars, ensuring continuity of services while Congress works toward a long-term fix.

The House unanimously passed the bill, and now, it’s time for the Senate to do the same! Senator Bernie Moreno and Senator Jon Husted, pass the Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act now. Survivors can’t afford to wait!

📸 A special moment in Artemis Center history: Throw back to when Gloria Steinem visited our team!

Steinem reminded us that lasting change begins when we challenge the systems and beliefs that allow inequality and violence to persist. Her work helped spark generations of advocates to speak up, push for change, and believe in a better future.

At Artemis Center, we carry that work forward every day. We stand with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, helping them find safety, regain control of their lives, and build safer futures.

Her legacy is a reminder that change happens when we refuse to accept “the way things are” and choose to create something better.

We honor her by continuing the work.
