Energy, impact, and leadership! ⚡️ United Way hosted this year’s Freedom Schools Local Training for over 50 Servant Leader Interns and Site Coordinators.

To prepare for summer programming, our team dived into:

Impactful Leadership: Cultivating the traits of a true Servant Leader.

Brain Development: Understanding how early childhood experiences shape learning.

Cultural Responsiveness: Implementing relevant, inclusive teaching practices.

Safety First: Learning Hands-Only CPR with the Dayton Fire Department.

Classroom Management: Discovering positive techniques to engage our scholars.

The day kicked off with a high-energy Harambee pep rally and team-building activities that left everyone inspired and ready to go. We can’t wait to welcome and impact 440 K–8 scholars this summer! 📚✨

We were honored to participate in today's Ohio DCY / 211 Legislative Lunch & Learn at the Statehouse!

A special shoutout to our very own Tom Kelley, who did a fantastic job as MC.

Tom had the privilege of introducing key changemakers, including Director Kara Wente and Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson, Senator Louis W. Blessing, III, Representative Bride Rose Sweeney, Representative Marilyn John, and Ohio 211 President Terry Carter who discussed
driving meaningful impact.

President Terry Carter closed the lunch by providing a 211 Ohio powerpoint overview of services.

Join us in wishing a massive, heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to Terry Graves-Strieter on her well-deserved retirement as Superintendent of the Greene County ESC!

After 30 amazing years with the ESC (and 11 years running the show as Superintendent!), Terry is officially trading in her school calendar for a wide-open schedule of fun, family, and continued community impact.

Terry has spent decades putting local kids first knowing that for a student to succeed in the classroom, they need a strong foundation at home. Terry connected the dots—using her role at the United Way to answer the unmet needs of families at the Greene County ESC, ensuring no child or parent fell through the cracks.

We are so proud to celebrate your incredible community milestones:
Superintendent at Greene County ESC
Vice Chair for the United Way of the Greater Dayton Area (Greene County Branch)
United Way Volunteer of the Year for Greene County 2021!

The best part about her next chapter? It is just a major promotion to "Full-Time Change Maker!" We are thrilled that Terry will continue her vital volunteer work and advocacy with the United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, keeping that essential loop of community care stronger than ever.

Thank you, Terry, for your decades of unwavering service, your endless energy, and for making Greene County a brighter, better place for everyone. You have more than earned the right to turn off the early alarms and enjoy some much-deserved later mornings! Enjoy every single moment of your hard-earned freedom—you have truly earned it!

🏆 Huge congratulations to Michael Carter, Senior Advisor to the President & Chief Diversity Officer at Sinclair Community College, for receiving this year’s Smith-Moore Award!

Presented by United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, this honor celebrates the legacy of past board chairs Fred Smith and John Moore. Both were absolute community icons who transformed the Miami Valley through visionary leadership.

Michael is the perfect recipient. He actually worked side-by-side with Fred and John to bring their visions to life. For over 40 years, Michael has opened doors, mentored young people, and championed equity across the Dayton Region.

Just a few of his incredible contributions include:

Establishing the Youth Work and Restitution Program at Clark County Juvenile Court.
Leading the nationally recognized Montgomery County Drop Out Recovery program.
Expanding College Credit Plus at Sinclair to boost student success.
Mentoring area high school athletes and the Sinclair Baseball Team in leadership and cultural awareness.
Curating the historic 1,500-piece "Our American Journey: The Black Experience in America" exhibit at the newly established Michael and Debbie Carter Center for American History.

Fred and John would be incredibly proud of your lasting impact, Michael, and so is the entire United Way community. Thank you for everything you do!

The Humanitarian Award is not presented every year. This year demands an exception. ✨

Jack was a dedicated Allstate Insurance professional for 35 years. He loved bowling, working on cars, and deeply cared for his community. Through his incredible foresight and generosity, his legacy will live on forever.

Earlier this year, a group of local non-profits received a combined first distribution from the John F. “Jack” Templin Trust totaling over $6.5 million.

United Way was honored to bring these community partners together to recognize this profound act of philanthropy:

Alzheimer’s Association
American Red Cross
Catholic Social Services
Chaminade Julienne High School
Church of the Ascension
The Food Bank
Goodwill Easter Seals
Hospice of Dayton
Think TV

We often ask: How can you help your neighbor? How can you help your community move forward? Jack answered those questions in a monumental way.

Special thanks to Jack’s attorney, Mike Conway (Conway Brock Co., LPA), for joining us to accept this award on behalf of the family. We are eternally grateful for Jack's trust in our collective mission to improve lives. 🤝
