Friendship grief is real.

When my friend died by su***de, I quickly learned that not everyone understood the depth of that loss. But love isn't defined by a title, and grief isn't measured by a relationship label.

This month, we're making space for the friends, best friends, roommates, teammates, and chosen family members who are grieving, too.

You matter. Your loss matters. You are part of the 135.

People actually say this. To grieving people. Out loud. Sometimes they mean well. Sometimes they’re just trying to make sense of who gets to grieve and who doesn’t.

But grief doesn’t sort itself by relationship status. And that sentence — however it was meant — has a way of closing a door on someone who already feels like they’re standing outside.

If you’ve heard it, you know exactly what it does. If you’ve been carrying loss that nobody around you named or made room for, know you are not alone.

Hope Shows Up in Unexpected Places.
Visit 14 was the Clintonville Farmers Market. Hope did not show up under the tent for this one.
She stayed in the car. Safe, warm, and dry. Nobody wants a moldy dragon.
In ancient China, dragons were believed to control the weather — rain especially. We're not saying Hope called this one in. But we're not not saying it either. Maybe she was peopled out.
John and John were there, rain and all. Because here's the thing about community grief — it doesn't require a close relationship to be valid. Someone in that market was carrying su***de loss quietly. They came out for tomatoes and kettle corn. And LOSS was there.
The 135 are everywhere. So is Hope. But sometimes not where you expect her.

Every month, LOSS Community Services sends 120–150 handwritten cards to survivors of su***de loss. 💙

Each of these cards is written by dedicated volunteers who take the time to offer a few words of compassion, encouragement, and connection to someone navigating one of life's most difficult experiences.

Hope shows up in unexpected places. 💛🐉
In mid-May, she showed up at two more—visits 11 and 12 on her journey to 135.
COTA — Central Ohio Transit Authority — hosts its annual employee mental health fair at two locations so every employee has the opportunity to participate. LOSS was honored to be at both stops, with our volunteer Jude at the table and Hope riding along in her dragon wagon.
Su***de loss moves through entire communities—workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, and faith spaces. The 135 people impacted by every su***de death don't grieve in isolation. They grieve alongside one another, often without even realizing it. That's what We Are the 135 is all about: recognizing community grief and reminding people they don't have to carry it alone.
A fun bonus: the fair's organizer is also named Hope, so there was double the Hope at both locations! ✨
We're still working on getting Hope the Dragon onto an actual COTA bus—stay tuned. 🚌
