In a recent story in our Ministry Guide, Carl Brenning, a charter member of our congregation of 70 years, reflects on UALC's beginnings with his dear friend Jane Leach. 🧡
Read Carl and Jane’s story:
I first met Principal Carl Brenning when I volunteered in my school office at age 12. Imagine our surprise when Mr. Brenning and I recognized each other at worship nearly 50 years later. From that moment on, a wonderful friendship blossomed. When asked to write a 70th anniversary piece about charter member Mr. Brenning—now 101 years young—I eagerly accepted.
Mr. Brenning and I spent time sharing stories that were both heartfelt and humorous. I discovered how deeply his life has been shaped by his faith in God, a faith consistently lived out through his commitment to church life. What began with a pastor's cold-call knock on his front door in the mid-1950s grew into a remarkable 70-year relationship with UALC.
Reflecting on the church's early years, Mr. Brenning remembers a congregation where everyone participated. Members taught Sunday school, led Bible studies, and joyfully served wherever needed. They built community through weekly breakfasts, bowling, golf, and softball—even surviving a baseball field lightning strike. Lifelong friendships were formed while serving, worshiping, and just enjoying life together. His advice is simple: get involved. Serve, share, worship, and play alongside others. Your sense of belonging and faith will grow.
When asked about a treasured memory, Mr. Brenning immediately spoke of the church's love for children. Louise, Carl’s wife of 78 years, joined him in investing in the faith and well-being of their two children, David and Susan, mirroring the priorities of the church. Then he smiled and observed, "That still seems true today. There is a thread running through our history that places remarkable value on the lives and faith of our children."
Looking ahead, Mr. Brenning reminds us that life will include hardships and discouragement. Yet these seasons are often when God strengthens our faith and prepares unexpected blessings. His birthday wish for UALC is beautifully summed up in the words of Scripture: "We walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7).
