Ohio’s hospice market looks different than it did a decade ago. As ownership changes and new operators enter the state, Ohio needs clear information about who owns and operates hospice programs.

HB 945 would strengthen state oversight of hospice ownership, including requirements tied to changes in ownership and review by the Ohio Department of Health. That gives Ohio another way to monitor a changing hospice market and hold providers accountable to state requirements. 🔎

Ohio’s hospice market is growing faster than the number of Medicare hospice patients served. From 2021 to 2025, the number of Ohio hospice providers grew 13.3%, while Medicare hospice patients served grew 7.5%. Average patients served per hospice fell from 543 to 515.

Adding more hospice providers does not necessarily mean adding access where Ohioans need it most.

HB 945 would require the Ohio Department of Health to consider geographic need before issuing new hospice licenses, helping direct future growth toward communities where additional capacity is warranted rather than adding providers to already concentrated markets.

Building a strong team and a healthy workplace culture gets a little easier when we make time to play and be a little silly together. 😁

Earlier this month, the LeadingAge Ohio team traded our usual meetings and laptops for a staff outing at Game Show Battle Rooms in Hilliard. The day was full of games, healthy competition and, most importantly, a lot of FUN. 🎲

Taking time together outside of our day-to-day work gives us a chance to get to know our colleagues differently, laugh together and simply enjoy being a team. 🏆
