Registration is officially open for our first-ever Oysters for Acres event! Join us on Wednesday, November 18th, 6 PM to 9 PM, to celebrate the land and community we love right here in the Midlands.

Oysters for Acres will bring together conservation-minded friends for an oyster roast and other delicious bites, b**r and w**e, live music, and good company at The Millstone At Adams Pond, set in the heart of the COWASEE Basin.

This Saturday, September 26th, is National Public Lands Day, a day dedicated to honoring the incredible public lands we all cherish. From wetlands & vital waterways, to mountains & serene forests, public lands are natural treasures that define our communities and provide space for recreation, relaxation, and inspiration.

It's a day to get outside, volunteer, and appreciate the land that connects us all. Here at Congaree Land Trust, we're proud to have helped protect and grow some of our local public lands through the work we do all throughout the Midlands. We're committed to expanding the conservation footprint in our region, protecting land to ensure clean water, vital wildlife habitats, and access to the outdoors for everyone.

Carla and Sarah are back from Denver, where they represented Congaree Land Trust at Rally, the annual gathering of land conservation practitioners from across the country hosted by the Land Trust Alliance!

Between learning sessions, plenaries, and conversations with colleagues from other land trusts, they returned with fresh ideas and new connections to bring to our work across central South Carolina.

Rally is where relationships grow, and ideas take shape. Spending time with people who care about protecting land as much as we do helps make our work even more resilient! Thank you to the Land Trust Alliance for bringing this community together, and to Carla and Sarah for representing CLT. We're glad to put what they learned to work for the 15 counties we serve right here in the Midlands.

We are excited to announce our fall celebration: Oysters for Acres! This fun-filled evening on Wednesday, November 18th, benefits Congaree Land Trust and brings together conservation-minded friends for an oyster roast (and other delicious offerings), b**r and w**e, live music, and good company. We will be hosted by The Millstone At Adams Pond, a classic venue in the heart of the COWASEE Basin, one of the landscapes that defines the Midlands and CLT’s main focus areas.

Today, we are welcoming the most recent addition to the CLT team! We are excited to have Greta Kremer join us as Stewardship & GIS Manager.

Greta hails from Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she had the privilege of working to conserve lands around her hometown as the Associate Director of Tecumseh Land Trust for two years. She has a bachelor’s degree in Geography and a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Science. Greta previously worked as a gardener and loves being outside in nature. She is excited to join the CLT community in protecting and stewarding the beautiful lands of South Carolina.

Join us in welcoming two new members to the CLT Board of Directors: Margaret Ellen Pender and Warren Duncan. Both join with a shared love of the outdoors and a commitment to protecting the land that defines South Carolina’s Midlands.

As a principal at Anchor Investment Management, Margaret Ellen brings two decades of client relationship experience to the board. A graduate of Presbyterian College and an avid outdoorswoman, she's just as likely to be found in the woods or on the water as she is in the office.

As Director of Forest Operations and Portfolio Management at Milliken Advisors, Warren works closely with landowners across the region on sustainable, long-term land stewardship. A Clemson grad, he spends his free time hunting and working on his family's tree farm in York County.

We're honored to have them join our board as we continue our work protecting the land that defines the Midlands.

This week, we took a little time to celebrate the retirement of Mark Lowery - CLT's Stewardship & GIS Manager! Mark joined our staff in September of 2019 and has poured himself into the stewardship and enforcement of our 230+ conservation properties. He demonstrated a true passion for our mission and commitment to serving our landowner partners. We wish Mark and his wife, Angie, the very best in retirement and can't wait to hear of the many traveling adventures to come.

Sometimes, land protection is about protecting a neighbor you'll never meet.

Across the Midlands, the land we help protect is already doing that work quietly: wetlands slowing floodwater and sheltering wood storks, old-growth bottomland giving foxes or bobcats a place to den, longleaf stands holding onto gopher tortoises and the dozens of species that depend on their burrows.

On National Wildlife Day, we're thinking about those neighbors we may not often see. Our job is making sure they still have somewhere to thrive.
