This week we're excited to recognize Crystal Haynie, an MRC Literacy Coach at Joseph Keels Elementary School!

For the past 5 years, Ms. Haynie has connected MRC volunteers with students, supporting meaningful literacy experiences along the way.

"MRC has made a tremendous impact by providing students with additional reading practice, encouragement, and positive relationships with caring adults," Ms. Haynie said. "Our students look forward to their time with MRC volunteers, and the partnership continues to build their confidence, strengthen their reading skills, and foster a love of reading."

Thank you Ms. Haynie! MRC is possible because of the wonderful work our school liaisons do every day to support our students and volunteers!

Reading with Michael became the highlight of MRC Volunteer Mallorie's week.

She showed up week after week, and something bigger than reading developed.

"By the time Michael and I finished our sessions for the year, I noticed something really amazing—vulnerability," Mallorie said. "He was willing to stop and sound out words in front of me, knowing it was a safe space to do so and that he believed in himself enough to try."

That's what an MRC volunteer can provide: a safe space to try, encouragement and someone who believes in you.

And there are more students like Michael waiting for someone to show up for them.

Teamwork matters on and off the field. It's through partnerships like this — with the Beamer Family Foundation and Gamecock Football — that we can extend our impact even further across the community.

When Gamecock student athletes volunteered to help pack backpacks for students in six Midlands elementary schools, we knew it would send an important message: these students matter. Their education matters, and their community is supporting them every step of the way.

👏Congratulations to our own VP of Finance & Administration, Andrea Tucker, on being named Board Chair for Together SC!

"I'm excited to lead and serve with so many amazing SC non-profit leaders. My goal as chair is to continue Together SC's work in strengthening the state's non-profit sector," Andrea says. "Each organization, including organizations like United Way of the Midlands, plays a key role in the success of the state's network of non-profits, and the success of the network as a whole is vital to the ability for South Carolinians to thrive."

We know she will thrive in this new role and we're so excited to see the impact she will make right here at home. Help us congratulate her in the comments below!👏⬇
