This week SC Phil partnered with The NiA Company to bring a special performance to second-grade students at Richland County School District One!

Inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, The Gift combined live music performed by SC Phil musicians with the humor and theatrical antics of NiA’s performers, introducing students to classical music through an engaging, interactive experience.

With Love, the Best of the Romantic Period is in one week (October 17) at the Koger Center for the Arts! Today, we’re sharing a few fun facts about the composers featured in this concert.

🎼 Quite the productivity streak: Giuseppe Verdi wrote his first 18 operas in just 11 years! That remarkable run helped propel him from a talented newcomer to acknowledged master. He slowed his pace in the years that followed, writing just eight more operas over the next 39 years—including La Forza del Destino, which you’ll hear at the concert.

🎹 A remarkable comeback story: After the harsh reception of his first symphony in 1897, Rachmaninoff turned to hypnosis to overcome a creative crisis! In 1900, neurologist Nikolay Dahl gave him three months of daily hypnosis treatments, encouraging him to write a great concerto. Soon after, Rachmaninoff began his work on Piano Concerto No. 2.

🎻 Talk about pressure at a young age: As a young composer, Johannes Brahms was hailed as Beethoven’s successor by fellow composer Robert Schumann. The enormous compliment also came with enormous expectations—so much so that Brahms waited until he was well into his career to write his first symphony in 1876.

Next month (November 2) presented by Prisma Health, Andy & Friends returns for the inaugural concert of the 26/27 season at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral!

Join celebrated pianist Andy Armstrong as he leads a sextet of internationally acclaimed musicians—David Byrd-Marrow (French horn), Harrison Hollingsworth (bassoon), Sooyun Kim (flute), Yoonah Kim (clarinet), and Elizabeth Koch Tisione (oboe/English horn)—through an intimate chamber concert celebrating the color, character, and expressive beauty of wind music. This concert brings together an engaging selection of 20th-century works, from the graceful elegance of Chaminade and Saint-Saëns to the haunting beauty of Piazzolla, alongside a contemporary work by GRAMMY Award-winning composer Jessie Montgomery.

The weather is looking beautiful for an evening at the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens, where Historic Columbia and the South Carolina Philharmonic are bringing this popular outdoor concert back to the gardens.

Enjoy Oktoberfest-inspired selections celebrating the lively musical traditions of Germany and Central Europe, performed by a brass ensemble. Bring your own blanket or chairs, and pack a picnic if you'd like!
