Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle We address low literacy and undereducation among adults in our region through free instruction.

We imagine a community where every adult has the literacy and English language skills he or she needs to live a fulfilling and productive life in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Literacy Volunteers strives to provide foundational education to support our students as they embark on workforce and educational paths that will help them secure better jobs and become more fully involved in community life.

And today kicks off one of our favorite traditions: sharing tutor and student voting pictures! Today, we celebrate LVCA tutor and student Caroline and Bahie, who voted early and took this wonderful picture after!

Today, LVCA honors Adult Education and Family Literacy Week!
Adult Education changes lives. It increases job opportunities, involvement in children's education, improves ways of life, and strengthens civic engagement.
In short, Adult Education builds strong communities.
We are so grateful for the amazing work our tutors and students do to make this happen. Learn more about our literacy empowerment mission at literacyforall.org

Happy Constitution Day! Today, we honor our amazing students working towards citizenship and the teachers and tutors supporting them along the way.

We can bet that they all know the answer to this Citizenship Interview question: "What founding document was written in 1787?"

"For 60 years, one idea has remained at the heart of : everyone has the right to read, write, learn and participate fully in society."

At Literacy Volunteers, we witness every day the transformational power that happens when people come together for literacy empowerment. Literacy changes lives.

Happy International Literacy Day.

For 60 years, one idea has remained at the heart of : everyone has the right to read, write, learn and participate fully in society.

Yet today, 739 million young people and adults still lack basic literacy skills.

UNESCO works with countries and communities to change this: strengthening literacy policies and programmes, building capacities, promoting lifelong learning and supporting partnerships that expand learning opportunities for all.

Through initiatives such as the Global Alliance for Literacy and the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, we also help spotlight effective solutions and encourage action around the world.

Because literacy is more than learning to read and write. It opens doors to knowledge, opportunity and human rights, and helps build more peaceful and sustainable societies.

60 years on, the goal remains unchanged: literacy for all.
