Freedom School Partners promotes the long-term success of children by preventing summer learning loss

Freedom School Partners serves the community of Charlotte, NC by providing quality Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® to children (called scholars) grades K-8 who most need but can least afford summer learning opportunities. The Freedom School program last six-weeks and give scholars three fundamental resources needed to develop their potential:

1. Literacy skills through six weeks of quality summer-programming
2. Social-emotional skills needed to make good decisions and
3. A community that believes in them comprised of community partners, friends, staff and volunteers. Our Mission: To inspire our scholars to love reading and learning, believe in themselves, and create extraordinary futures.

15 summers. 3,556 volunteer hours. One incredible partnership. ❤️👏

This week, 34 seventh graders from Providence Day School brought their energy to the Latrobe Warehouse, helping organize and sort supplies, clean equipment, and lend a hand wherever it was needed.

This year marks 15 summers of Providence Day partnering with Freedom School Partners as a site partner! And their impact goes far beyond this week. Throughout the school year and summer, 806 members of the Providence Day community volunteered with FSP, contributing 3,556 hours and helping collect supplies for 154 boxes of items identified as most needed by FSP.

Here’s to 15 years of showing up, serving alongside us, and supporting our scholars. We’re so grateful for this incredible community! ❤️

Every book opens the door to a new idea, a new adventure, or a new possibility. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Promising Pages to help our scholars build a love of reading and a personal library of their own.

📚 This summer, FSP served 606 scholars and the impact speaks for itself: 82% of our scholars maintained or improved their reading ability.

During the summer months, students can experience learning loss, making continued access to literacy and learning opportunities especially important. Freedom School helps scholars keep learning, building confidence, and growing all summer long.

These results are a reflection of what’s possible when scholars have access to the support, resources, and opportunities they deserve. 💛

☀️Our summer program may last six weeks, but preparing for it happens all year long!

Last Friday, our team attended the Fall Career Internship Fair at UNC Charlotte to connect with students interested in becoming Freedom School Partners Summer Leader Interns.

From planning curriculum to recruiting volunteers and finding passionate Summer Leader Interns, the work behind Freedom School happens year-round.

The summer may be six weeks, but the impact starts long before the first day.

📖❤️ Celebrating Dolly Day and the legacy of Dolly Parton!

Dolly Parton has spent decades helping children discover the joy of reading, and her legacy is a beautiful reminder of what a book can mean to a child. Today, 1 in 6 children under age 5 in the U.S. receives Imagination Library books.

We share that same belief: when children have access to books and opportunities to learn, they can imagine what’s possible and dream bigger.

Here’s to Dolly, and to everyone helping put more books into the hands of children.

🦻 As one Northeastern University Charlotte student shared, “Every child is different, and every child deserves an approach that meets their needs.”

This summer, Northeastern University Charlotte Speech-Language Pathology students and faculty brought health literacy to life at Freedom School! Scholars explored stroke recognition, hearing health, and concussion awareness through hands-on activities, games, and plenty of questions.

We loved seeing our scholars get curious, ask questions, and take the lead. Thank you! 💛

We’re so grateful to Bright Builders STEM (BBS) for partnering with Freedom School Partners to bring more than 300 STEM activity boxes to our scholars this summer.
