Yesterday Healthy Charlotte Alliance hosted “The Medical Ma*****na Debate: Risks, Regulation, and Public Health,” bringing together clinical experts and public health leaders for an important community conversation about medical cannabis in North Carolina.
We heard valuable perspectives from Dr. Jeff Hardin, Novant Health, who explained the different forms of medical cannabis available in the U.S., the important distinction between FDA-approved cannabinoids and dispensary products, and the known risks and research limitations. Bri Partlow, MSW, LCSW, LCAS, CSI, Anuvia Prevention & Recovery Center, shared an addiction specialist’s perspective, highlighting risks of dependence and the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, particularly youth and individuals with mental health challenges. We were also deeply moved by Andrew, who courageously shared his personal journey through ma*****na and substance misuse and his path to sobriety with the support of Dilworth Center - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Dr. Larry Greenblatt, State Health Director, NC Department of Health and Human Services and Co-Chair of the Cannabis Advisory Council, closed the program with an overview of the current North Carolina landscape, regulatory considerations, and how the Council is working to ensure recommendations remain grounded in evidence and public health protection.
We are deeply grateful to our program partner and sponsor, the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, and to everyone who joined us to learn and engage in this important community health conversation.
