Our Dilworth Rotary Club was honored to hear Dr. Kimberly Scott, Mecklenburg County Public Health Director, this past Friday. Dr. Scott shared some of the many areas the Mecklenburg Public Health Department has responsibility for and some of their responsibilities.
We learned that in the area of Environmental Health, the Department has multiple responsibilities, including
Food Safety and Inspections
Public Swimming Pools
Pool Inspections
Tattoo Regulation
Rodent Control
Mosquito and other Vector Control
Lodging/Childcare/Nursing Homes/Lead Investigations
In the area of supporting Youth and Families, the Department has responsibility for school health and immunizations. We were surprised to learn that the nurses employed by CMS are Public Health employees which helps to keep the county attuned to health trends impacting students and educators. Dr. Scott did say that they are very much aware of the trend toward avoiding immunizations and taking the necessary steps to help keep the public informed.
Other areas included in providing support for youth and families include a review of every child fatality with the intention of developing prevention strategies, mental health access, breastfeeding stations and WIC, and dental care navigation. The county actually has a mobile unit that is deployed primarily to schools to assist students with dental needs, however, it can be made available to help others with access issues in addressing health needs.
The Health Department also has the ability to provide support when a crisis touches a family. They have crisis intervention training which helps first responders in situations involving mental health matters. They also provide resources for helping first responders handle the stress involved post-incident.
Dr. Scott shared the importance of community health assessments to determine needs. Meck Health completes an assessment every three years which is available to the public.
