💙 On October 8–9, NC Hillel’s Board of Directors came together for an immersive retreat. With board members living across the country, these twice-yearly gatherings are an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and plan for the future of Jewish life across North Carolina.

We’re grateful to our board members for making this time together a priority and for their continued commitment to the Jewish students we serve. ✨

🗣️ Thursday evening, our board members joined the UNC community at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for a panel discussion featuring David Makovsky, Ziegler Distinguished Fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, and Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh, the first Druze woman elected to Israel’s Knesset.

Co-sponsored by the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies and Hillel, the event brought important perspectives on the Middle East to campus and highlighted the value of bringing together different voices and experiences.

We were also grateful to welcome UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts Lee H. Roberts who joined us on stage to offer welcoming remarks and show his support for Jewish life on campus. We’re thankful for his support of our community! 🤝

💡 Friday was dedicated to looking ahead and thinking strategically about NC Hillel’s future. Board members discussed priorities, reflected on their role in moving our mission forward, and explored how each can make a difference.

Our shared commitment helps strengthen Jewish life on campus and build a vibrant community for students across North Carolina. đź’™

A new year is a chance to leave some things behind and make room for something new. ✨

On Simchat Torah, we finish reading the Torah and immediately begin again, returning to the very beginning. It’s a reminder that every ending can also be a new beginning.

Charlotte Hillel celebrated that spirit of new beginnings with a mocktail competition and asked students what they hope to leave behind and what they want to begin in the new year. Swipe to see what they shared. đź’š

You may have seen some reports of an incident at a North Carolina Hillel event recently, and we wanted you to hear the facts directly from us. In March 2026 Appalachian State Hillel hosted a screening of the documentary “We Will Dance Again.” The screening was organized and led by Hillel student leaders to educate the community about the tragic events of 10/7/2023 in Israel.

A few hours prior to the screening, an anonymous violent threat was made on the social media platform YikYak.
NC Hillel staff and students immediately alerted campus law enforcement, who acted quickly and decisively.
Officers informed university leadership of the threat and identified the source, who was later charged for the threat of mass violence on a public campus.

Once the source was identified and there was confirmation of no physical threat, the program proceeded safely and without incident. NC Hillel is deeply grateful to Appalachian State University public safety and law enforcement for their quick and decisive response.

App State Hillel continues to be active on campus with vibrant social, cultural and religious programming, engaged student leadership, and a supportive community that strengthens Jewish life on campus.
