That’s a wrap on year one of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center summer internship with Haverhill High School, and what a way to close it out!

Over the final days of the internship, students shifted into research mode, taking a deep dive into the four focus areas and the challenges identified in their problem bank. Their work is helping build a stronger foundation for the next group of interns this fall, giving them a head start as they continue investigating the problems and opportunities shaping the clean energy industry.

Students also began preparing their final presentation, which returning interns will deliver in September to share what they’ve learned and set the stage for the next phase of the program.

Year one may be in the books, but the momentum has never been higher. We can’t wait to see where these students—and this program—go next!

Week two of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center summer internship is underway and our Haverhill High School interns are taking their problem-solving to the next level.

Students were joined by Stephanie Couch, Executive Director of LMIT, who shared her perspective on invention, innovation, and the importance of developing solutions to meaningful problems.

The interns then put their invention skills into action during a sprint focused on four clean energy challenges selected from their problem bank. From there, they began exploring a new tool in their problem-solving toolkit: research. Students were introduced to qualitative and quantitative analysis and began thinking about how data and evidence can help them better understand the challenges they're working to address.

From identifying problems to gathering evidence and developing solutions, the interns are learning what it takes to turn a big idea into meaningful innovation.

Day three of our Massachusetts Clean Energy Center summer internship challenged Haverhill High School students to develop the technical and collaborative skills they'll need to tackle real-world clean energy problems.

Students kicked off the day exploring MicroBits, building (or sharpening!) foundational coding skills before putting their teamwork to the test in a 30-minute balloon tower challenge. With limited materials and plenty of creativity, teams raced to build the tallest freestanding structure.

The day concluded with one of the internship's most important activities as students dove into the clean energy problem bank they developed through interviews with industry professionals. Together, they evaluated each challenge based on its impact and urgency, laying the groundwork for the decisions they'll begin developing in the days ahead.

Every activity is building toward one goal: preparing the next generation of clean energy innovators.

Day two of our Massachusetts Clean Energy Center summer internship was packed with inspiration and creativity! We were honored to welcome State Representative Andy X. Vargas, who stopped by to congratulate our Haverhill High School interns and encourage them as they begin their work exploring Massachusetts' clean energy future.

Students then jumped into an Invention Process Sprint, where teams were tasked with inventing a device supporting folks with a disability. Teams identified a need, conducted research, brainstormed solutions, and transformed their ideas into working prototypes—all in a single session. It was an exciting introduction to the power of invention as a tool for solving real-world problems.

This is just the beginning of two weeks filled with innovation, collaboration, and hands-on learning.

Innovation is back in session!

This summer, Haverhill High School students are taking the next step in their clean energy innovation journey.

During a two-week internship, students will explore the Lemelson-MIT Invention Process while revisiting the clean energy challenges they uncovered through interviews with industry professionals during last spring's internship. By combining research, collaboration, and inventive thinking, they'll transform community-identified problems into opportunities for innovation.
