August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. Today, and every day, we remember, honor, and grieve our beloved and beautiful loved ones, our neighbors and community members, and people near and far whom we have lost to overdose and who should still be here with us.
We also take action. We stand with our loved ones, offering direct support to and organizing alongside people who use drugs in defense of their rights, health, safety, and dignity.
TOGETHER, WE MOURN.
TOGETHER, WE FIGHT!
Every day, people who use drugs keep themselves and each other safe in the face of escalating attacks on our communities, locally and nationally. People who use drugs practice community care and harm reduction, share their experiences and demands, and lead our organizing efforts rooted in collective expertise, experience, and evidence-based solutions.
WE KEEP US SAFE!
As coordinated campaigns of criminalization and political complacency continue to put our people’s lives at risk, we invite you to join us in building the skills we need to practice and to reduce PREVENTABLE overdose deaths. Join us NEXT MONDAY, September 7 at 4 PM to learn how to respond to an overdose and strategies for keeping ourselves and our communities safe.
We’ll share safer-use strategies and policies that save lives, stigma-reducing language and ways to talk about drug use, how opioids and naloxone affect our bodies, how to identify and respond to an overdose, and considerations and safety planning around calling 911.
We also look forward to sharing ways you can join us in taking collective action to end the criminalization of poor people who use drugs and demand evidence-based solutions that keep our communities safe and healthy.
As always, stay safe! 💜
