"The future of innovation will be defined by who we invite in — and how early we start.”

Those words from our 2026 Catalyst Award honoree, Yvonne Hao, COO of Flagship Pioneering and former Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development, capture the heart of Science Club for Girls’ mission.

During a fireside chat with Bonnie Bertolaet, SCFG Executive Director, and Dr. Sally Kornbluth, 18th President of MIT, Yvonne spoke about the importance of creating opportunities for girls and gender-expansive youth to build confidence, access, and a sense of belonging in STEM from an early age.

Yvonne also emphasized the broader impact of investing in STEM equity:

"Programs like Science Club for Girls are addressing these inequities, driving innovation, and fueling economic growth. I'm deeply honored to be recognized alongside leaders who share that commitment, and inspired by the future being shaped by Science Club for Girls."

We are grateful for Yvonne's leadership and commitment to creating a stronger, more inclusive future for our communities and workforce.

This we’re celebrating Jiani Johnson as she prepares to graduate from Harvard College with a degree in bioengineering.

Jiani serves as president of Harvard’s Science Club for Girls Mentor Chapter and has spent the past three years mentoring girls and helping inspire confidence in STEM. Through both mentorship and leadership, she has made a lasting impact on younger students while pursuing her own goals in biotechnology and healthcare innovation.
Inspired by a desire to help patients and improve the tools doctors use to treat disease, Jiani hopes to integrate emerging technologies with drug development to improve patient outcomes. Following graduation, she will begin working in process development at Sanofi.

Jiani also shared that, as a Black woman in STEM, navigating scientific spaces has sometimes meant having to work harder to gain opportunities and be taken seriously. Even so, she has continued to lead with resilience, purpose, and community.
We are proud to celebrate Jiani’s achievements and grateful for the mentorship, leadership, and care she has brought to Science Club for Girls.

Congratulations, Jiani—we’re excited to see where your journey leads next!

In the last week of our Blast Off curriculum, students imagined what life could look like on another planet by designing and building their own space habitats.

They thought through what astronauts would need to live safely and comfortably in space, then created bases with areas for sleeping, eating, working, and relaxing. As students built their structures, they explored how scientists and engineers plan for the challenges of long-term space travel and life beyond Earth. Every habitat reflected creativity, imagination, and thoughtful decision-making as students transformed their ideas into unique designs.

Experiences like these help girls and gender-expansive youth explore STEM in creative, meaningful ways while building confidence in their own ideas and abilities.

We were thrilled to debut our new video at this year’s Catalyst Awards, highlighting the power of mentorship, confidence-building, and early investment in girls and gender-expansive youth in STEM. 💫

Featuring reflections from Angell Muñoz-Morales, Program Manager and SCFG Alum; Christabel, Junior Mentor; and SCFG parents Zakia Jarrett and Alexis Okafor, the video captures the impact of the SCFG community and the confidence our participants build each week in our Science Clubs.

A huge thank you to Jay Dobek and our Production Sponsor, Last Minute Productions, for bringing these stories to life! 🎥

We are proud to highlight Sanofi US, a longtime partner whose generous support is critical to Science Club for Girls' success. In addition to sponsoring our Catalyst Awards and participating as a Curriculum Supply Kit Packing Partner, Sanofi recently awarded us a grant to support the implementation of our K-12 continuum of STEM education and mentorship programs. Science Club for Girls truly wouldn't have the impact it has without dedicated partners like Sanofi!

This we’re excited to spotlight Tu Youyou.

Tu is the first Chinese woman citizen to receive a Nobel Prize. She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 for her contributions to the discovery of artemisinin. By bridging Chinese and Western medicine practices, her groundbreaking discovery has helped reduce mortality rates for patients suffering from malaria.

At Science Club for Girls, we celebrate the contributions of women in STEM who continue to inspire the next generation of innovators to create meaningful change in communities around the world!

This week in our Blast Off curriculum, students became engineers as they designed and built their own robotic arms.

Their mission: retrieve a “sample” from a crater without stepping inside, just like robots used in real space exploration. Students used the engineering design process to brainstorm ideas, build their models, test their designs, and make improvements along the way.

Through trial and error, they discovered that small changes can make a big difference. They strengthened their designs, improved control, and worked through challenges with creativity and persistence.

Hands-on STEM experiences like this help girls and gender-expansive youth build confidence, explore engineering concepts, and see themselves as future innovators.

As our Science Clubs wrapped up for the semester, we asked SCFG mentors to reflect on what mentoring has meant to them 💫

From sparking curiosity to building confidence and belonging in STEM, our mentors help create spaces where girls and gender-expansive youth can see what’s possible.
