Chamber Music America CMA develops and strengthens an evolving chamber music community. Today, however, chamber music comprises many different musical styles and genres.

CMA defines chamber music as music for small ensembles in which players perform one to a part, generally without a conductor. Historically, the term chamber music was restricted to Western classical music for small ensembles, such as the string quartet. At the heart of this art form is a spirit of collaboration. Democratic in essence, chamber music demands that each individual engage in a close mu

sical dialogue with the other performers. Their collective musical instinct, experience, knowledge, and talent guide the process of interpreting, rehearsing, and performing.

Congratulations to the inaugural recipients of the Thea Musgrave Performance Fund! Made possible by a landmark gift from Thea Musgrave herself, this program will support two ensembles performing works written by the composer. Each awarded project must also include an audience engagement component highlighting Musgrave’s biography, artistic influences, cultural and historical contexts of her work, and/or her continuing impact on contemporary composition.

Born in Edinburgh in 1928, Musgrave is considered one of the most significant composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, with an enormous body of work renowned for its range as well as its dramatic, inventive, atmospheric, and adventurous flair. CMA is honored to celebrate this titan of contemporary music through this historic new program.

Congratulations to our 2026 New Jazz Works grantees! CMA’s flagship composition grant in jazz began in 2000 and has since funded the composition of more than 300 works. CMA is proud to continue its 26-year partnership with the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in funding this significant award to jazz artists and ensembles. Fifteen ensembles will receive grant funds ranging between $30,000 & $36,000 to support the creation, performance, and optional recording of a new jazz composition.

Classical Commissioning grantee Crossing Borders Music has engaged in cross-cultural work in the Chicago Area for the past 15 years.
