We’re delighted to welcome Lex Uttamsingh to Access Justice Brooklyn as our 2026–2028 Borchard Fellow!

We’re grateful to the Borchard Foundation Center on Law & Aging for supporting this fellowship and investing in the next generation of attorneys committed to advancing justice for older adults.

Lex earned their law degree from NYU School of Law in 2026 and brings a longstanding commitment to working with older adults, including experience with DOROT and New York Legal Assistance Group’s Elder Law Practice.

At AJB, Lex will work exclusively with older Brooklyn residents, helping New Yorkers 62+ access SCRIE and supporting older adults through our bankruptcy practice.

As Lex puts it:
“The spirit of my work is to ease the financial strain that so many older Brooklyn residents feel. I'm thrilled to be a part of AJB's team to do so.”

And Lex is already making an impact. In their very first week at AJB, Lex testified before the New York City Council in support of expanding SCRIE and DRIE income eligibility—an important step toward helping more older New Yorkers remain in their homes and communities.

We’re thrilled to welcome Ziedah Diata to Access Justice Brooklyn as our new Director of Pro Bono!

Ziedah brings more than two decades of experience advancing access to justice, building cross-sector partnerships, and creating pathways to legal support for underserved communities. Most recently, she served as Chief Administrative Law Judge and Director of the New York State Department of State’s Office of Administrative Hearings, where she led a statewide tribunal and launched the Department’s first Access to Justice Initiative.

At AJB, Ziedah will lead our pro bono program and help us expand and deepen our network of attorneys, law firms, corporations, financial services professionals, and other mission-aligned partners. Her leadership will help us engage and mobilize even more professionals to provide meaningful, high-quality legal support to Brooklyn residents.

And for Ziedah, this work is personal. A Brooklyn native, she shared:
“I am honored and teeming with excitement as I join the leadership team of Access Justice Brooklyn as Director of Pro Bono. AJB’s mandate could not be more critical to ensuring access to justice for the most economically vulnerable among us. I am eager to lead strategic engagement, training, and mobilization of attorneys and other professionals who are seeking meaningful, impactful work anchored in the dynamic, stalwart support that is AJB’s way.”

Today, we honor Juneteenth—a celebration of freedom, resilience, community strength, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

While we commemorate a defining moment in our nation's history, we also recognize that the effects of historic inequities—including redlining, housing discrimination, and barriers to economic opportunity—continue to impact many Brooklyn communities today.

At Access Justice Brooklyn, we believe that everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of income. Through free legal services, community education, and the dedication of our volunteers, we work alongside our neighbors to protect homes, strengthen financial security, and help build pathways to opportunity.

This Juneteenth, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing equity, expanding access to justice, and investing in the community strength that fuels collective progress across Brooklyn.

Because when communities have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive, we move closer to a future where freedom, stability, and justice are within reach for all.
