After a beautiful summer working with our STEAM students, Irondale Youth Programs are back!

We’re kicking off Irondale NextGen with Miss Julie—a bold new adaptation of August Strindberg’s classic, adapted and directed by Emilio Maxwell Cerci.

🥂 It’s New Year’s Eve. The party has started. The rules are loosening. And nothing is as it seems.

Starring Rivka Rivera as Miss Julie and Jacqueline Joncas as Christine, this production explores power, desire, ambition, and social status, bringing a new perspective to a play written nearly 140 years ago.

🍂 The 2026/2027 season is all about looking back, trying new things, and making something together. Which, if you know Irondale, sounds pretty on brand ;)

We’re bringing back pieces from our history, creating space for new writers and artists, launching Irondale NextGen, and building a brand-new ensemble production from the ground up.

We’re opening the Irondale vault!

From the Vault is a new series revisiting productions from Irondale’s 43-year history and asking: What happens when we bring them back into the room today?

First up is an "on your feet reading" of Outside the Law, an ensemble-devised piece originally created in 1989 that brings Shakespeare’s As You Like It together with the story of Pretty Boy Floyd.

The Writer's Room offers a casual, intimate setting where members of the company will�gather with an audience to explore three or four selected pieces, discovering together which works come alive in the room and which speak most directly to the moment.

No big production. No fancy bells and whistles. Just words, actors, audience energy and our space.

We’re opening our doors to friends and neighbors for an Irondale Holiday Party with mulled w**e, cookies, and hot chocolate, followed by a reading of A Christmas Carol, directed and adapted by NextGen member Peter Charney and performed by the Irondale Ensemble.

In January, you get to see something you don’t usually get to see: a play before it’s a play.
We’ll open the doors for an early workshop of The 1876 Project, our newest ensemble-created production.

Then, this next spring, it comes to the stage.
150 years after 1876, Irondale looks back at a country celebrating its 100th birthday while grappling with deep division, asking:

What stories does America tell about itself—and what gets left out?

Directed by Jim Niesen, The 1876 Project will culminate in a world premiere!

The ’70s and early ’80s saw a wave of ensemble-driven theater companies taking shape across the U.S. Different companies with different practices, but all part of a moment when artists across the country were creating their own structures for making theater together.

Terry Greiss, Jim Niesen and Barbara Mackenzie-Wood met in 1978 while working began working together at Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. Five years later, they created their own experiment, the Irondale Ensemble Project.
More than four decades later, Irondale is still here—one of the country’s longest-standing active ensemble theater companies.

And now we are nurturing a next generation of ensemble makers. Let's see what happens next!

In 1983, three young artists wanted to make theater together.
They wanted a place to create, experiment and play.
So they decided to start one. And the Irondale Ensemble Project was born.

Against all odds, here we are 43 years later.
And we're still experimenting.
Asking questions and learning by doing.

But now there's another generation in the room.
And they have their own questions.
