Fort Greene Park Conservancy is looking for a Director of Development to lead our fundraising efforts, cultivate community and donor partnerships, and drive strategies that keep our park green, vibrant, and accessible to all. We are excited to celebrate our Fort Greene Park Community Hero James Sessoms, at our Community Heroes Meet & Greet on August 19 from 5:30 to 8:00pm!

Growing up in Lafayette Gardens, James Sessoms was raised in a tight-knit environment, instilled with beliefs he carries to this day. After leading a criminal lifestyle, he ultimately had to learn the hard way by finding himself incarcerated. Sessoms made the most of his time, earning a college degree and qualifying for early release. He joined The Focus Forward Project’s 12-week program, which provides formerly incarcerated adults with educational resources and support to navigate social stigma and future opportunities. Through his participation in Switching Lifestylez, Sessoms focused on assisting youth by helping people reflect, learn, act, and evolve to embrace the healthy, caring, stable individual within. Sessoms aims to raise financial literacy among youth, believing the ability to control your finances is key. “My position is always–I was them before, so I know the pitfalls I’ve experienced. So I try to deter them from that road to destruction and lead them on the path to greatness.”

We are excited to celebrate our Fort Greene Park Community Hero Fred L. Price at our Community Heroes Meet & Greet on August 19 from 5:30 to 8:00pm!

Home is a feeling rather than a place for community leaders like Fred L. Price, whose work spans beyond New York City. In the 1990s, Price traveled to Ghana and visited the Door of No Return: a historical monument that was once an exit point through which millions of Africans were shipped across the Atlantic for slave labor. He filmed his travels in a documentary called Home, highlighting the mobility of culture–how it survives after crossing oceans and trickling through generations. Throughout the 1980s, Price had a pivotal role in the Office of City Council President Carol Bellamy, serving as a Special Assistant to the Executive Office. He strengthened connections between institutions and the diverse neighborhoods they served, ensuring that community voices were heard and valued. Price didn’t simply envision a better New York; he created one, leaving his door open for those who share his pride in Black culture.

We are excited to celebrate our Fort Greene Park Community Hero Ebony Bailey, at our Community Heroes Meet & Greet on August 19 from 5:30 to 8:00pm!

Reflecting on the three generations her family has lived in Fort Greene, Ebony sees her deep community roots as a way to always help her neighbors. In 2023, Ebony joined the NeighborhoodStat (NSTAT) program, following in the footsteps of her mother’s community service to give back to the long-term residents she connected with over the years. She manages the Myrtle Avenue Partnership’s Commercial District Needs Assessment (CDNA) Grant, involving organizations to help revitalize neighborhood commercial corridors in a way which prioritizes the input of local residents, especially seniors. Ebony’s ability to organize makes her a vital member of the community. When a child was fatally struck in a crosswalk on his way to school, she led a volunteer crossing guard effort, which opened the door for critical change. Ebony believes change starts from the ground up, with simple acts like picking up litter leading to greater neighborly respect. Above all, Ebony Bailey sees Fort Greene as a community of resilience, and she continues to work for the well-being of her neighbors.

Young Naturalists is a youth-led program for kids ages 5-13 to share and grow their knowledge about the world around them using Fort Greene Park as their open lab. Held biweekly with sessions ranging from bird identification and recycling minigames, to sharing all sorts of knowledge with one another, kids can expect to participate in hands-on activities and experiments and learn from their fellow Young Naturalists.

We are excited to celebrate our Fort Greene Park Community Hero Dorian Muller, at our Community Heroes Meet & Greet on August 19 from 5:30 to 8:00pm!

Dorian Muller was raised in Brooklyn and grew up in Farragut Houses. Dorian is the Director of Property Management at the Brooklyn Community Housing and Services, a school board member at Compass Charter School, and an advocate for Brooklynites. Coming from a tough upbringing, Dorian relates to those plagued by the disparities spreading in the Fort Greene community. Since at least 2008, he has been part of the fabric of local community life, showing up in ways that are consistent, humble, and rooted in genuine care. He works with a Brooklyn-based organization, the Melquain Jatelle Anderson Foundation, to support young adults and families impacted by gun violence. He believes that great education, powerful communities, and the fight for change are what influence better circumstances for people who are overlooked by those in power. “I don’t think education should depend on how much money you have. We should just have great schools, period.”

We are excited to celebrate our Fort Greene Park Community Hero Carla Cook, at our Community Heroes Meet & Greet on August 19 from 5:30 to 8:00pm!

Carla Cook, a jazz musician, has lived in Fort Greene since 1990. Every other Saturday from 2020 to 2025, Carla delivered groceries to elders in the neighborhood. For Carla, it was never just about food but about making people feel seen. Attributed to her Midwest upbringing, Carla describes the difference between a neighborhood and a community simply: “a neighborhood is a geographical outline defined by a map; a community is when neighbors take care of one another.” A simple smile or bringing a casserole over when someone is sick are just a few of the ways Carla makes Fort Greene a home. Since the ’90s, Carla has remained committed to fostering not only the arts within the neighborhood as it has evolved, but also maintaining the heart of what a true community is.
