The Willowbrook Consent Decree required that all of the institutionalized residents at Willowbrook, who had been living in unhygienic and abusive conditions, be placed in group homes in neighborhoods. Independent Living Association, Inc. (ILA) rose to the occasion by admitting 37 Willowbrook Class members into our first three houses in 1985 and 1986, and many more afterwards. The average life expectancy of Willowbrook Class members was in the mid-30s. We are proud to say that we have extended that life expectancy - many of our Individuals are well into their senior years. Some of our Individuals are even in their 80s!

Happy National Senior Citizens Day to all, especially to the Individuals in whose well-being we are entrusted.

Two weeks and counting until our 19th Annual Golf Outing at beautiful Cold Spring Country Club on August 31st!

Amid the cyclosporiasis outbreak that has been impacting multiple states this summer, ILA’s nursing staff have been educating our employees about important food safety measures to help prevent infection and keep our Individuals healthy. From thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables to proper hand hygiene to the sanitization of all food preparation surfaces, our dedicated teams continue to take every precaution now and always!

Great things are growing in our Staten Island garden, including beautiful tomatoes and peppers! Our Individuals take pride in helping to cultivate the garden and are excited when the veggies become ripe and are ready to be picked. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes that our cooks will prepare!
