Many women enter prison during their childbearing years. Some spend years or even decades incarcerated, returning home to discover that menopause has arrived, fertility has declined, or their dreams of motherhood have become far more complicated.
For women who desire children, incarceration can carry a hidden sentence, one that extends beyond the prison walls.
The conversation is not simply about having children. It is about reproductive health, access to quality medical care, aging, family planning, and the emotional impact of losing reproductive years while incarcerated.
As we work toward a more humane criminal legal system, we must be willing to discuss the full impact of incarceration on women, including the impacts we rarely see and seldom acknowledge.
Have you ever thought about how incarceration affects a woman’s reproductive future? We would love to hear your thoughts.
