"I started volunteering at the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl® in the 90's while I was working at Dana-Farber. I soon realized many volunteers and guests had their own stories as to why they were there. Mine was to honor my mother, who was a victim of breast cancer.

In 2016, my daughter Jessica joined me in volunteering. It became our special father/daughter yearly event. Little did we know how significant it would become.

Last year, volunteering took on a new, special meaning. Jessica had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer as a result of Lynch Syndrome. Just days before the Scooper Bowl®, Jessica finished six months of chemotherapy.

So many people came up to Jessica to wish her good health and shared that they were survivors, too. I had tears in my eyes watching each moment. As her father, I was so proud and so grateful for the love and caring of the Jimmy Fund community." - John, a longtime Scooper Bowl® volunteer and former Dana-Farber Cancer Institute employee

This June, he will be back to volunteer with his daughter Jessica and to celebrate that she has beaten ovarian cancer! 💕

Jimmy Fund Captain, Garrett Whitlock, and Boston Red Sox player, Payton Tolle, made a very special visit to some of our youngest fundraisers at Fisher Elementary School this week! Students enjoyed a morning of fun with their Red Sox role models while learning the special impact of giving back.

Thank you to Garrett Whitlock and Payton Tolle for playing an important role in representing our mission to strike out cancer!

An all-you-can-eat ice cream festival is coming to Boston next week. Here's how to get tickets

When Eric first went to the doctor about some pain he was feeling, it was dismissed as symptoms of getting older and something he "just had to deal with." He did, until the summer of 2016 when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Eric turned to Dana-Farber for support. As a part of his treatment plan, Eric underwent chemotherapy, and his wife, Chrissy, assumed the role of caregiver.

"I spent every waking minute with him because if he didn't make it, I wanted to him to know I did everything I could," Chrissy says. "And if he did make it, I wanted him to know I was there and that we were in this together."

Thanks to treatment at Dana-Farber, Eric is now a cancer survivor, but that's not where the story ends. A few years after Eric finished treatment, Chrissy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through it all, they leaned on each other. Read more about their inspiring story on the Jimmy Fund blog.

"I started the Michele Simeone Abrecht Memorial Golf Tournament with Jimmy Fund Golf in honor of my mom, Michele, who passed away from cancer in December 2024," says Michele's daughter, Charlotte.

The care Michele and their whole family received during treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute inspired Charlotte to give back to future patients and their families. When she discovered Jimmy Fund Golf presented by Mohegan Sun, she knew creating a tournament would be a positive way to both honor her mom's legacy and make a lasting difference for others.

"My mom deeply believed in showing up for people, even during the hardest moments of her own illness," says Charlotte. "Supporting Dana-Farber through Jimmy Fund Golf feels like a meaningful way to honor my mom's life, give back to the team that cared for her, and continue the mission of helping other families receive more time, hope, and breakthroughs."

Charlotte notes the best thing to come of her mom's treatment at Dana-Farber was more time. "More holidays, more conversations, more laughter, and more memories were all made possible by their research, innovation, and compassionate care. Through the funds raised by Jimmy Fund Golf, I'm able to give families like mine more time too."
