On Saturday evening, we’ll be bringing our performance “To the Hands” to University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square. With two days left to go, we’re highlighting the two versions of “O Virtus Sapientiae (O Strength of Wisdom)” we’ll be opening our performance with.

“O Virtus Sapientiae” is one of 77 original poems set to plainchant by 12th century composer Hildegard von Bingen, one of the first identifiable female composers in Western music. Hildegard’s original chant will be followed by a haunting arrangement by contemporary Canadian composer Katerina Gimon.

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday at 7 pm to hear the contrasts of old and new highlighted by the two settings.

One week to go until we fill the halls of University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square with an evening of stirring music. Our upcoming performance, “To the Hands,” features works by predominately female composers that explore the various ways in which the hands represent aspects of humanity.

One such piece is Jocelyn Hagen’s “Hands,” which explores how hands can represent unity in times of turmoil. Written in vocalise (without words) to avoid language barriers and paired with choreographed movements, “Hands” builds from soloist melodies to rich harmonies.
