Newborn Individualized Developmental Care & Assessment Program (NIDCAP)

~Improving the Futures for Newborns and Their Families. NIDCAP is the most comprehensive, evidence-based model of developmentally supportive care and assessment for preterm and fullterm newborns and their families in the hospital, and the transition home. Challenge and Opportunity
Res

earch has documented the beneficial effect of NIDCAP in terms of shorter intensive care and overall hospital stay, better weight gain and improved behavioral outcomes that endure beyond infancy. Studies have also documented that the NIDCAP approach enhances brain structure and function when measured by sophisticated medical techniques such as EEG and MRI. Challenge and Opportunity

The incidence of preterm birth, worldwide, is rapidly increasing. In the US, the incidence of prematurity currently stands at 12.7%. Over 25% of all preterm infants are also born too small for their gestational age. These infants present immediate and significant challenges to their parents and to their caregivers in Newborn Intensive Care Units. They are hypersensitive, difficult to feed, and difficult to calm. More than 50% will go on to develop learning and emotional disabilities, requiring special education and mental health services. The challenge is even greater in developing countries.

Will you be joining the Australian-led internationally promoted in 2026? This is a great initiative to promote an evidence-based, parent-led intervention in the NICU. We will be sharing research in the coming weeks that supports the benefits of reading in the unit. Find out how you can join the event in the flyer. Life's Little Treasures Foundation

The Little Readers Read-a-thon is back 14–28 August! πŸ“šπŸŽ‰

Share the joy of reading with your little one in the NICU/SCN or from the comfort of home. Reading aloud supports your baby's brain development, helps reduce stress and creates precious bonding moments. πŸ’•

We're sending Little Readers starter packs to registered Australian hospitals for families in the NICU/SCN so hospitals don't forget to register by 31 July to get your starter pack. International hospitals are welcome to join too but please note prizes are available for Australian hospitals only.

Those participating from home, join us throughout August for Friday Night Story Time on YouTube with a wonderful lineup of guest authors. πŸ“–
