The NIDCAP Federation International (NFI) promotes the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP).

~Improving the Futures for Newborns and Their Families. NIDCAP is the most comprehensive, evidence-based model of developmentally supportive care and assessment for preterm and fullterm newborns and their families in the hospital, and the transition home. Challenge and Opportunity
Research has documented the beneficial effect of NIDCAP in terms of shorter intensive care and overall hospital stay, better weight gain and improved behavioral outcomes that endure beyond infancy. Studies have also documented that the NIDCAP approach enhances brain structure and function when measured by sophisticated medical techniques such as EEG and MRI. Challenge and Opportunity

The incidence of preterm birth, worldwide, is rapidly increasing. In the US, the incidence of prematurity currently stands at 12.7%. Over 25% of all preterm infants are also born too small for their gestational age. These infants present immediate and significant challenges to their parents and to their caregivers in Newborn Intensive Care Units. They are hypersensitive, difficult to feed, and difficult to calm. More than 50% will go on to develop learning and emotional disabilities, requiring special education and mental health services. The challenge is even greater in developing countries.

Finally, the Swedish Guideline on Immediate Skin-to-Skin Contact and Mother-Newborn Couplet Care is published in Frontiers of Pediatrics and Neonatology. With this we can continue to inspire for Zero Separation between Newborns and Mothers regardless of gestational age and medical needs. The best interest of the child for the best possible outcomes.

‼️New Emeritus Member‼️
The NFI Board of Directors unanimously voted James Helm, PhD to be an Emeritus Member of the NFI, in honor of his considerable contributions and dedication to the NFI. We are so very appreciative of the decades of extraordinary leadership, training, and guidance that Jim has provided (and continues to provide!) to the NFI and NIDCAP. The NFI is proud to present an open, one day conference on the last day of the 37th Annual NIDCAP Trainers Meeting. The One Day conference is open to all interested in learning about NIDCAP Care. NIDCAP Trainers, Professionals and Supporters of NIDCAP Care from around the world will convene to discuss issues around optimizing preterm and term infant care with the NIDCAP approach.

Continuing education credits will be available for RNs.
