Members enjoyed a fun and educational outing to The Orchard at Altapass recently. The highlight was Sam McKinney’s historical tales as we traveled through the orchard on a wagon, but lunch, the apple pie, and views were also spectacular! Several of us also picked up some fun things in the general store.
The orchard is run by a nonprofit organization with the mission to “save the good stuff”: regional traditions, culture, and land on which all was created. They were hit by a late freeze this year and don’t have apples to sell, but we each sampled a Virginia beauty, a rare heirloom variety. Delicious!
Our next outing is Friday, Oct. 9, at Grandfather Vineyard & Winery. Meet us at 2 p.m. or earlier if you want to help save the table!

We enjoyed another fantastic presentation by the Fall Color Guy, Dr. Howard Neufeld, at our September meeting. Members learned about the science behind leaves changing color, what affects the timing and brilliance of the changes, and the best High Country spots for viewing.
Bonus: Dr. Neufeld shared lots of gorgeous photos throughout his presentation!
Members also spent time catching up with each other, enjoyed yummy refreshments, and gave updates on our community gardens.

At the August meeting, members enjoyed an informative presentation by Brian Antczak, horticulturist and owner of Bug Lovers Native Plants. Brian shared about the benefits of native plants for pollinators as well as gardening techniques that support the pollinators. He provided a handout with a long list of beneficial plants, noting which are more deer-resistant.

Members also enjoyed some social time, gave updates on our community gardens, and heard about upcoming events, including the September presentation from the Fall Color Guy and an outing to The Orchard at Altapass.

After the meeting, members had a chance to do what gardeners love best: Buy more plants! Look for some of these native plants to show up in the club’s community gardens.

Our members have been hard at work at the Watauga County Public Library on Queen Street in Boone!

After lots of weeding and some fresh mulch, this large bed is looking gorgeous.

We thank Kathleen, George, Katie, Kathy, Bonnie and John for their dedication to this high-visibility garden. We know it will bring lots of enjoyment to the many people who pass it as they go to the library.
Great work, y’all!
