At the August meeting, members enjoyed an informative presentation by Brian Antczak, horticulturist and owner of Bug Lovers Native Plants. Brian shared about the benefits of native plants for pollinators as well as gardening techniques that support the pollinators. He provided a handout with a long list of beneficial plants, noting which are more deer-resistant.

Members also enjoyed some social time, gave updates on our community gardens, and heard about upcoming events, including the September presentation from the Fall Color Guy and an outing to The Orchard at Altapass.

After the meeting, members had a chance to do what gardeners love best: Buy more plants! Look for some of these native plants to show up in the club’s community gardens.

Our members have been hard at work at the Watauga County Public Library on Queen Street in Boone!

After lots of weeding and some fresh mulch, this large bed is looking gorgeous.

We thank Kathleen, George, Katie, Kathy, Bonnie and John for their dedication to this high-visibility garden. We know it will bring lots of enjoyment to the many people who pass it as they go to the library.

Club members enjoyed a wonderful outing to Springhouse Farm in Vilas today!
Mother and daughter duo Jean and Amy Fiedler gave us an intro to their farm and shared stories of recovery and resilience after Hurricane Helene.
After checking out the farmstand full of fresh veggies and fun souvenirs, some members picked their own bouquets. All enjoyed the bright blooms and busy pollinators before retreating to the pavilion for lunch with a lovely breeze.
Thank you to Ann Kirsch for arranging this enjoyable outing!

Our next meeting is Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. with a presentation on native plants by Brian Antczak, owner of Bug Lovers Native Plants nursery. We will meet at the Blue Cross/Blue Shield meeting room, 2640 NC 105, Suite 101, Boone.
