It’s been official since May, but we are so excited that Frances Healy is joining us full time as the Avery County Program Director after taking over as interim program director this past spring! She has been a fantastic addition to our team from the start and is such a joy to work with. Frances is thoughtful, creative, and so much fun! She has already made a positive impact on our program and our students, and she has brought great experience, ideas, and caring to the program. Thanks for everything you’ve already done and we can’t wait for more adventures on the horizon!

It took us a little while, but we wanted to shout out Colleen and thank her for the time that she spent as Avery Program Director. She brought experience, new ideas, energy, and a lot of silliness to Mountain Alliance and we are so grateful for everything that she has done for MA, especially for our students. Colleen, thank you for your humor, for your dedication to quality programming, and for caring for our students. We’re excited for you to follow your dreams and to continue to make a positive impact on people’s lives. (We’re also glad you’re still in the area and that you still come visit us from time to time ☺️). Thanks for being wonderfully you!

It was so great to welcome back the Watauga RA crew on Wednesday! The second half of their trip was filled with even more adventures including visiting Kitch-iti-kipi’s beautiful blue waters, stopping by the Manistique lighthouse, and touring Michigan State University (which included a backstage tour of their theatre department and a stop at the on-campus Dairy Store that makes its own ice cream from scratch!). They also got to volunteer on a farm and adventure in Cuyahoga and New River Gorge National Parks! We loved hearing all of their stories from the trip and the growth they experienced along the way. Here’s to another great year of Rolling Academy adventures!

Watauga Rolling Academy: Part 1!!

Watauga RA is flying by! After driving to Raleigh, a lovely stay with Sean’s parents, and a VERY early flight, this crew hit the ground running! Their first week was filled with beautiful scenery and city exploration. They got to hang out at the beach by Lake Michigan, visit the Milwaukee Art Museum, volunteer at Kinship Community Food Center, go to a cheese market, and more! The second part of week one saw the group leaving the city and spending a few days on Grand Island in Michigan where they camped, hiked, kayaked, and took in some incredible views. Once they were off the island, they also got to visit the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Seashore and tackle a 10-mile hike!

We can’t wait to see what other adventures they get into!

Help us welcome them home and hear all about their journey at their Symposium on Wednesday, June 24th (6pm) at Hatchet Coffee in Boone!

Avery Rolling Academy: Part 2!!

The second half of our Avery RA was just as eventful as the first half! After a day where students could choose to climb or rest back at camp, they experienced a dark sky program. They then went sand boarding at the Great Sand Dunes National Park before making their way to Arkansas where swimming, a trip to Goodwill for Symposium clothes, volunteering at Bentonville Bike Fest, biking around Bentonville, and a trip to the Walmart Museum kept them busy! As they slowly made their way back to the High Country, they stopped at a Star Wars themed Airbnb to prepare for their Symposium where they shared speeches, showed their documentary, and answered questions about their journey.

We’re so proud of this awesome group of humans and everything that they accomplished during their travels!

Avery Rolling Academy: Part 1!!

As we get closer to welcoming our Avery Rolling Academy students back to the High Country, we wanted to share some highlights from the first half of their trip! After flying to Denver, CO and making their way to Moab, UT, the crew visited Canyonlands National Park and participated in a ranger program. While in Moab, they also took on two days of canyoneering!! They made their way back to Colorado, visiting cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde National Park and touring Fort Lewis College before continuing on for more adventures.

Stay tuned for Part 2 and help us welcome back this amazing crew of students on Wednesday, June 17th at 4 pm at Crossnore Presbyterian!!
