REMINDER: our second September Pattern Review, Knit Yoke Skirt live Zoom class with Sarah Veblen, is on Thursday, September 24, at 2:00pm CT.
•
Discover how to make a skirt that is stylish, creative, and wonderfully comfortable to wear. The secret is a stretch-knit yoke that gently adapts as your waist changes throughout the day. It offers the comfort of a yoga-style waistband without sacrificing style—and it can remain hidden under an untucked top or become part of the skirt’s modern design.

In this class, Sarah Veblen will show you how one simple construction method can create an amazing variety of skirts. Explore wrap-inspired designs, softly flared silhouettes, pleats, asymmetric hemlines, and looks ranging from playful and full to sleek and sophisticated. The skirt portion can be made from either woven or knit fabric, giving you countless opportunities to experiment with fabric, shape, and proportion. These skirts are comfortable, versatile, relatively quick to sew, and a wonderful way to express your creativity. Once you make one, you may find yourself wanting an entire wardrobe of them.

ASG Austin member Glenda made this repurposed dress for the 2024 ASG Austin Luncheon Up-cycling Challenge. The shirred dress used 1m of teal linen and scraps from 4 projects (pictured). She loves how it turned out!

REMINDER: our September Pattern Review, Pattern Grading 101 with Jennifer Stern, is on Wednesday, September 2, at 2:00pm CT.

Do you have patterns in your stash that you'd love to make for yourself or a friend, but the size you need isn't included in the size range? Or maybe you have a vintage pattern that you'd like to sew, but you need to make it bigger? Join Jennifer Stern to learn an easy method for sizing a clothing pattern to fit you.
•
We'll start the class with a discussion about pattern sizing and grading as it relates to fitting a pattern. Then you'll learn the step-by-step to grade a basic pattern up a size and down a size. We'll discuss how you can use this easy method to size and fit patterns to your unique shape. You'll leave class with the tools and confidence to grade your patterns to the perfect size for your shape!

REMINDER: our September Luncheon will be Saturday, September 19, at 11:30am CT.
•
Join us for a celebration of National Sewing Month at our annual September Luncheon. Balcones Country Club, 8600 Balcones Club Dr, Austin, TX 78750. The event is open to any ASG member and guests. $10/member, $25/guest.
•
Participate in our "Sew Never Have I Ever" Challenge! Everyone has different sewing skills and excels in projects they repeat again and again. This year's sewing challenge is to find a project, pattern, fabric, or skill that you haven't mastered or haven't ever worked with before. Choose your own adventure, just make sure you've never been on that adventure before. As always, you will reveal your "Sew Never Have I Ever" garment or sewing project at our Annual ASG Luncheon in September! (Participants will be eligible for the grand prize. Winners will be selected at random from all participants. Must be present to win. Restricted to one entry per person. The challenge is open to all attendees).

ASG Austin member Hannah F recently made baby onesies for a college friend. She purchased onesies from Hobby Lobby and used Canva to create her designs. She took a lot of camping trips with this friend, and loves the "little explorer, big adventures" design she made. Her friend loved them!

ASG Austin member Gerhild made a coat using Butterick 5891 by Katherine Tilton (no longer in print). It included items that are out of her comfort zone so it was a fun challenge. The "fabric" is a painter's drop cloth and she used a blouse found at Goodwill for the fabric on the piping, collar, and cuffs. She leanred how to do a mitered corner on a pointed hem. She loves how it turned out!

Former ASG Austin member Jessie picked up and already cut out Jane Over Shirt by Style Arc Patterns while traveling last summer. She used the black print rayon from her stash to test the fit and found it to be perfect with no adjustments needed. Jessie used the burrito method for the back yoke and made the same shirt in a white and blue print cotton for her daughter-in-law. She had already made the shirt a shirt for her son in the same fabric but with a blue and white print. She loves how they all turned out!

ASG Austin member Hannah F recently made a flat bottom zipper pouch out of a Hobby Lobby placemat. She saw someone doing this on Instagram before a Hobby Lobby run and decided to test it out. Having a "pre added" lining was nice, but she noted the thick seams on the placemat made certain spots tricky to work on. While she wouldn't do it again, but she is pleased with how it turned out!
