Wondering what Ride for the Westside is really like?

It’s neighbors gathering at the starting line. Friends encouraging each other along the route. Families exploring the historic Westside together. And people from across Atlanta sharing a morning filled with movement, history, food, and community.

As WABE’s Rose Scott said at last year’s event, the historicWestside is “a critical, significant, and sacred part of Atlanta’s history.”

On Saturday, September 26, you’ll have the chance to experience it for yourself.

🚲 8:30 a.m. — 10-mile bike loop
🏃🏾 9 a.m. — Chip-timed 5K
🚶🏾‍♀️ 9 a.m. — Heritage Walking Tour

“You’re going to learn stuff about our city you may not know.”

That’s how Westside Future Fund President and CEO John Ahmann described Ride for the Westside last year — and it’s one of the things that makes this event so special.

This isn’t simply a route through Atlanta. It’s an invitation to slow down and experience neighborhoods at the heart of our city’s civil rights history, shaped by generations of residents, leaders, churches, schools, and small businesses.

Then make plans to experience it for yourself on Saturday, September 26.

The groundbreaking of 280 James P. Brawley is a major milestone for Westside Future Fund. It marks the organization's first ground-up, new-construction project in Vine City, the last neighborhood Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called home with his family.

The 18 permanently affordable homes coming to the community are possible because of corporate, philanthropic, and public investment aligned around a single objective: keeping legacy residents in the neighborhoods they built.

The $6.7 million development is supported by the James M. Cox Foundation (Cox Enterprises) and the Tull Charitable Foundation, with $1 million in supporting investment from the Westside Tax Allocation District. Additional funding is provided through the WFF Impact Fund, Westside Future Fund's corporate-funded vehicle for catalyzing affordable housing and neighborhood-serving development across the historic Westside.

Together, this braided funding demonstrates how public tools and private, philanthropic capital can work in concert to support restoration without displacement in historic neighborhoods like Vine City and English Avenue.

Every partner in this project has invested in the same conviction that guides Westside Future Fund's work: a neighborhood's restoration should be measured by how many of its longtime residents remain to benefit from it.

Westside Future Fund, joined by City of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Councilman Byron Amos, city leaders, community partners, and residents, broke ground yesterday on 280 James P. Brawley — an 18-unit multifamily development marking the organization’s first ground-up, new-construction project in the Vine City neighborhood.

Built on land that has sat blighted and vacant for years, the multistory development will deliver 18 new high-quality, affordable homes serving legacy families with live, work, and learn connections to the historic Westside community through Westside Future Fund’s signature Home on the Westside program.

The project reflects WFF’s commitment to restoration without displacement, converting underused land into permanently affordable housing that allows legacy residents to remain and new neighbors with ties to the community to put down lasting roots.

Join us next Friday, August 21 for the Transform Westside Summit, "Principals in Partnership: Advancing Student Success Across the Booker T. Washington Cluster."

This month, we'll welcome the school leaders guiding students across the historic Westside: Lateisha Andrews, Vice Principal of Herman J. Russell West End Academy; Tiauna Crooms, Principal of Booker T. Washington High School; Dr. Teruko Dobashi, Principal of M. Agnes Jones Elementary School; Melanie Sithole, Principal of Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy; and Annique McMillian, Vice Principal of Hollis Innovation Academy.

We'll hear how these leaders are working together across the cluster to support students and families, and what it looks like when schools, neighbors, and partners pull in the same direction. The future of the Westside is being shaped in our classrooms today.

What does your Ride for the Westside registration help make possible?

It supports work like Home on the Westside — our signature initiative helping families find homes to rent, own, and stay rooted in the community.

That work includes:

🏠 Affordable homeownership opportunities
🔑 New and renovated rental homes
💵 Down payment assistance and financial coaching
🌳 Property tax relief that helps legacy homeowners remain in their homes

Because restoring a neighborhood isn’t only about buildings. It’s about making sure the people who give the historic Westside its history, culture, and character can be part of its future.

Every registration helps us keep that work moving forward.

Join the fifth annual Ride for the Westside on Saturday, September 26, presented by Chick-fil-A.

Congratulations to Brandon Teal, one of the newest homeowners through Westside Future Fund's Home on the Westside program.

Brandon leads programming at both the YMCA at Morehouse School of Medicine and the YMCA at Good Sam, housed inside the Good Samaritan Health Center right here in English Avenue. Last week, he closed on a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home just blocks from the community he serves every day.

Brandon's story reflects exactly what Home on the Westside was built to do: create real pathways to homeownership for the neighbors who are invested in the future of the historic Westside. Now he'll live in the neighborhood he shows up for every day.

Welcome home on the Westside, Brandon!

Earlier this month, the Westside Future Fund Home on the Westside team joined families, students, and staff at the Booker T. Washington High School Open House to talk about what's possible right here at home — homeownership support, rental assistance, and the programs that help longtime residents stay and thrive in the neighborhoods they've always called home.

Meeting families where they already are is how this work happens. Thank you to the BTW community for the warm welcome.
