Join us for a conversation exploring Good to Be Seen, the inaugural exhibition of The Creatives Project’s Curatorial Fellowship.

Curator Sidney Pettice (Sidney🌙) will be joined by featured artists Rita Harper (Рита), Montenez Lowery (Montenez Lowery), and Chip Moody (Chip Moody) for a conversation exploring photography, public art, storytelling, and the ideas behind the exhibition.

Good to Be Seen transforms six digital billboards throughout Downtown Atlanta into a public gallery, bringing contemporary photography into the city’s everyday landscape. Through photographs rooted in Black Southern life, the exhibition celebrates moments of care, kinship, resilience, and belonging, inviting residents and visitors alike to encounter deeply personal stories that reflect the richness and complexity of Atlanta’s communities.

Curated by Sidney Pettice, Good to Be Seen asks what it means to be seen in public space. By placing these works outside the walls of traditional galleries, the exhibition expands access to contemporary art while encouraging meaningful encounters with the people, places, and stories that shape our city.

Hez Stalcup is an experimental dance artist who has been dancing professionally since 2013, creating work for MINT Gallery, Eyedrum, Dance Truck, ELEVATE Atlanta, Flux Projects, The Hambidge Center, Atlanta Contemporary, MOCA GA, and more.

Jahrea Brown is finding home in curiosity and wander — dabbling in all things creative as expression and riding the flow toward more and more freedom.

Gavin Bernard: The Commons

Gavin Bernard’s (Gavin Bernard) solo exhibition The Commons explores the possibility of truly knowing ourselves and others within notions of public and private spaces, and their deconstruction.

The Commons transforms the interior of the historic Christ Church building in Hapeville through Bernard’s nesting structures, plant installations, filtered light, collaborators’ relational movements, and visitors’ presence. Drawing its name from the 1968 essay “The Tragedy of the Commons,” the exhibition investigates how the social construction of shared space influences our movements and thoughts, and asks: how do we protect our humanity within systems of privatization designed without?

The exhibition features works by Gavin Bernard alongside collaborators Hez Stalcup (Hez) and Jahrea Bee (jahrea bee). Co-curated by Heather Bird Harris (Heather Bird Harris) and Samantha Singleton (Samantha Singleton), Museum Director, Hapeville Depot Museum.

Built in the late 19th century as a modest Carpenter Gothic chapel, Christ Church serves as a profound backdrop for this exploration of community, heritage, and common ground. Guests are invited to ring the historic church bell upon entry and experience the luminous windows glowing through the night.

The public is invited to visit during three evolving activations of The Commons:

Accessibility: Christ Church is accessible via a paved sidewalk from the rear parking lot and a ramp into the building. Seating will be available indoors. Public restrooms will be available and are also accessible at ground level. Parking is free.

TCP is excited to announce Heather Bird Harris as the selected curator for our Fall Curatorial Fellowship! As part of the fellowship, Heather will collaborate with TCP alum Gavin Bernard to create an interactive installation at the Historic Christ Church in downtown Hapeville.

Opening on September 25, the exhibition will offer visitors an engaging and immersive experience that highlights the creative vision of both collaborators.

This project is made possible through the generous support of the City of Hapeville; curatorial guidance of Hapeville Depot Museum Director Samantha Singleton, whose research and vision helped bring this project to life; and funding support from the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

Heather Bird Harris is an artist, curator, writer, and educator whose work investigates alternative ways of knowing that make emergence and systems change more possible. Known for materially grounded and place-based works across painting, film, and social practice, Harris blends abstraction with communal, scientific, and more-than-human archives to examine the entanglements of colonial epistemology and ecological crisis. She is the recipient of fellowships at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, The Golden Foundation, The Hambidge Center, and the Art & Social Justice Fellowship at Emory University. Recent exhibitions include the New Mexico State University Museum, Louisiana State University, Stoveworks (Chattanooga, TN), and Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Greenville, SC), with upcoming exhibitions at the Fine Arts Center (Austin, TX), the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (Portland, OR), and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gavin Bernard is a British-born interdisciplinary artist, designer, and educator based in Atlanta. His work considers how memory is held in materials and how those materials change through use, weather, handling, and time. Moving between large-scale installation and spatial design, he often begins with textiles, reclaimed objects, or organic matter, allowing light and the architecture of a site to become part of the work.
