Knight Park had its ribbon cutting last week.

Please take a moment to read about all the help and work that has gone into making the park what it is today, we hope you and your family enjoy all the park has to offer.

The park amenities you see in Knight Park are part 6 of 14 phases of the Park Pride Visioning plan established in 2017. The renovation included a major overhaul of the playground, the pavilion with interior Mural, the library nook, the multi-use courts, the new bridge and the Est 1893 mosaic Sculpture.

The beautiful park updates you see now are inspired by and dedicated to the late Jim Comeford. As former president of Howell Station Jim cared for the needs of the neighborhood including the grand idea to improve Knight Park. His partner Ed Belding provided the original concept for this structure.

These new amenities are a shining example of what can be achieved when everyday people, non-profit organizations, private sector donors, and local government all work together.

We would like to thank the following people:

Park Pride: Executive Director Michael Haliki
Our Park Pride Masterplan Visioning leaders: Andrew White and Teri Nye
Kayla Atland, Director of Grantmaking + Fiscal Sponsorships
And so many more of the Park Pride staff working behind the scenes supporting Knight Park. Thank you

We would like to thank the 2017 Knight Park Visioning Steering Committee: They worked with the community to help design our park masterplan.

Friends of Knight Park / Howell Station 501(c)3

In March of 2015, a group of concerned Historic Howell Station residents founded Friends of Howell Station 501(c)3 to raise money to fight the urban blight that had taken over Knight Park. Knight Park had once been a beautiful and family-friendly centerpiece to a vibrant working class neighborhood. Although the date of the official park opening is uncertain, the Community Center building was built in 1945. Currently, the Community Center building is boarded up and its roof collapsed in 2015. A park that was once the a shining jewel of the neighborhood is now an unsafe eyesore.

As a result of very thoughtful leadership, Friends of Howell Station 501(3)c non-profit was awarded a visioning grant in 2017 by Park Pride. Park Pride conducts two park improvement plans each year for communities located in the City of Atlanta. Part of Friends of Howell Station’s partnership with Park Pride is establishing a Knight Park Steering Committee comprised of neighbors. Multiple Steering Committee and Neighborhood Meetings are held to determine how Howell Station would like to use Knight Park. These meetings have resulted in the 2 plans pictured above.

Friends of Howell Station leadership has been actively applying for numerous grants in order to pay for the amazing renovation plans. However, the neighborhood is still responsible for raising funds and contributing many hours of sweat equity to this project.

The Annual Fund Raiser and Silent Auction at Monday Night Brewing is FoHS’slargest fund raiser of the year and raised over $6000 in 2017.
