The National Black Empowerment Council’s (NBEC) mission is to empower leaders to work together strategically to close the systemic wealth, influence, and achievement gaps between African Americans and more structurally advantaged groups.

NBEC is investing in leaders who can build across difference.

In Washington, D.C., NBEC convened 30 HBCU and Hillel student leaders for the inaugural Collegium: Concord, held in partnership with Hillel International.

Over four days, students built relationships through honest dialogue, including a fishbowl conversation centered on listening to understand, not simply to respond, and visits to the Israeli and Haitian embassies, where diplomacy and leadership came to life.

Through Collegium: Concord, NBEC is equipping a new generation of leaders to listen with intention, build trust, and turn connection into action.

Black and Jewish communities have stood together before. NBEC is proud to help carry that legacy forward.

At Ohio River South, Dr. Ivory Toldson joined NBEC for BOUND, a fireside chat inspired by his latest book, Possibility and Statistics. The discussion examined how data shapes narratives about Black communities and what becomes possible when research is grounded in context, empathy, and hope.

For NBEC, the conversation reflects our commitment to challenging deficit-based narratives and advancing ideas that recognize the full potential of Black people and communities.

Building a business requires more than ambition. It requires access to capital, informed guidance, and the right relationships.

In recognition of Small Business Month, NBEC convened entrepreneurs and small business owners at Chase Bank in Harlem for “Building Black Business: Capital, Growth, and Opportunity.”

Moderated by NBEC Regional Director Flo O’Neal, the conversation featured Earl Thomason Jr. of Empire State Development and Shekera Green of Chase Bank, who shared practical insights on accessing resources, navigating business development, and building for long-term growth.

The gathering reflected NBEC’s commitment to connecting Black entrepreneurs with the knowledge, resources, and networks needed to move their businesses forward.

What began as a national mission has grown into a global movement.

Marvel Joseph reflects on how NBEC’s work now extends across the African diaspora, connecting business leaders, educators, policymakers and changemakers around a shared commitment to education, economic empowerment and community development.

Through the Sixth Region Initiative, that vision is building stronger relationships across the United States, Africa, Latin America and beyond—while preparing the next generation of Black leaders to shape the next hundred years.

In South Africa, Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela and Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway reflected on Nelson Mandela’s belief that education gave a person dignity and could change the course of a life.
