Panthers are the same. No matter the size. This won our black cat hearts over.
Scientists are allowing a stray cat to roam inside a black panther’s sanctuary, because the unlikely friendship may have become key to her recovery.
The female black jaguar had been brought to the sanctuary injured and severely stressed. Villagers reported that she had recently lost her litter following birth complications and had later been hurt during a confrontation with another jaguar.
Her physical injuries began healing, but another problem emerged. She barely ate. Caretakers watched her lose weight despite leaving fresh meat for her every day, and her condition slowly began getting worse.
Then a stray black cat wandered into the sanctuary. Staff initially prepared to remove it after spotting the little cat stealing from the jaguar’s food, but something unexpected happened.
Instead of attacking the intruder, the jaguar slowly approached and nudged it. The startled cat hissed at her. The jaguar simply laid down beside it. Then, as the stray continued eating, she began eating too.
Over the following days, caretakers noticed the same pattern. Whenever the little black cat appeared around feeding time, the jaguar seemed calmer and was far more willing to eat. So they stopped chasing her unusual visitor away.
Nobody could say exactly what the jaguar saw in the tiny stray, or whether losing her litter had anything to do with the bond. But the sanctuary had spent weeks trying to convince a black panther to eat.
Apparently, all she needed was someone to share dinner with.
