Jean has been a volunteer with us for about 2 years! Not only has she changed the PARC, but she would tell you the PARC has changed her, too.

When she first heard of the PARC at her church, Jean was drawn to our mission and immediately knew she wanted to get involved. When she came to volunteer, Valerie asked Jean what her strengths were. The only thing she could think of was that she enjoyed talking to people. That was exactly what the PARC needed.

As Jean has spent the past two years volunteering, she has made and fostered many friendships with our members. She loves getting to know them and having her eyes opened to what it’s like to live in homelessness.

“Everyone that comes [to the PARC] takes away something.” That’s not just the members, that’s our volunteers and staff too. Jean has changed in ways she couldn’t have imagined even just a few years ago. When she began volunteering, Jean had just moved to Amarillo and was having a hard time finding her footing. After coming to the PARC, she found a place to belong. Gratitude filled her; it continues to do so every day.

There is a place for everyone at the PARC. People who want to help in the kitchen, talk to our members, or teach classes.

If you’d like to volunteer or have questions, we invite you to our volunteer meeting on August 25th at 6:00! Please message us for more information.

Today we celebrated and said goodbye to our amazing summer intern, Gracie🧡

We have gotten the opportunity to get to know her over the past 2 summers. Gracie has blessed us with her thoughtfulness, courageousness, boldness, and her sincere and compassionate heart.

Gracie, thank you for the joy, kindness, and hard work you brought to the PARC. You made a difference, and we’re so grateful for the time we got to spend with you.

We love you, Gracie🧡

Dale and Diane have been volunteering together at the PARC for about three years; we love and appreciate their presence every week!

Before Dale and Diane began volunteering, they felt intimidated by the PARC and who they might encounter within it. Once they began, though, they quickly found themselves comfortable and confident here.  Now, both would describe the PARC as a place where they are accepted as themselves and able to use their strengths to serve those who are homeless in Amarillo.

Diane said the PARC has “changed my perspective, it’s changed my thinking.”
Through conversations with our members, they’ve become more aware of what it looks like to live in homelessness and, therefore, be more empathetic towards those in a hard place. Firsthand, Dale and Diane have seen that we are all only a few steps away from becoming homeless.

Dale and Diane have been changed by the PARC, and we have been changed because of them. We rely on our volunteers and are so grateful for the work they do! We have places for volunteers with all skill sets! If you’d like to volunteer or ask questions, stop by or give us a call during our business hours!

Meet Matthew!

Matthew grew up in church, but he got involved in drugs and gangs in his early 20s. He describes this time as his “dark road”, yet Matthew had a friend who never gave up on him. The friend strove to be a light, inviting him to church over and over. Finally, tired of being “bothered”, Matthew said yes. Still high, Matthew joined his friend for an experience that changed his life. The worship that day is what he believes brought him back to Christ.

Reflecting on life’s ups and down, Matthew said, “I’ve felt alone, not worth investing in.” But Matthew has found friends and a God who reminded him of his worth. Since being in Amarillo, Matthew has spent lots of time at the PARC and Faith City Mission. At the PARC, we are the friend that never gives up. Like his friends and family along the dark road, we walk with our members to remind them of who they are and whose they are. We love hearing our members’ stories and want to share when they succeed! Here’s where we’ve seen Matthew do great things:

Matthew has been known to be a committed worker at a popular chain restaurant. Enough so, that he immediately got a full-time job at the Amarillo location when he moved. When his wife initially got sick, he began working only part-time to help care for her. Near the time of her death, Matthew had to quit his job to tend to her full time, becoming homeless in the process. Still grieving after her death, Matthew knew he must continue to work. He went to his old boss and asked for his job back. Because of his reputation for hard work and dedication, he got the job!

We are so proud of Matthew and our members who are committed to reaching greatness in their endeavors. Not only is Matthew working hard at his job, he is starting back to school in the fall. We are proud of his dedication to try new things and take next steps, even in the face of adversity.
