From hands-on volunteering to sharing resources, Americans’ charitable efforts reveal a rich tapestry of generosity. When it comes to donating, Americans prefer to channel their funds through nonprofits or religious institutions, rather than giving directly to individuals.

This preference sets the U.S. apart from global norms. Our research on American donors and their giving habits found that this likely stems from a strong desire for accountability and detailed information about how their contribution will be used.

Charities can meet this expectation by prioritizing transparency in communications and using compelling, narrative-driven storytelling helps bring impact to life — showing not just where donations go, but the real-world change they make.

The intention-action gap explains why many supporters intend to donate to causes they care about, but ultimately don't. In 2024, 31% of non-donors in the U.S. say they considered donating but didn't end up doing so. This figure rose to 51% in 2025; highlighting a growing gap that organizations can’t afford to ignore.

Closing this gap requires intentional outreach from charities. This means using targeted campaigns that align with donor interests and motivations, creating seamless, user-friendly giving experiences, and offering recurring donation options that make it easy to follow through on intent. Just as important is maintaining consistent visibility — with both new supporters through new channels and existing supporters through regular reminders, so that when the impulse to give arises, action can quickly follow.

Over the next two decades, a groundbreaking $124 trillion will move into the hands of next-generation heirs, setting the stage for a whole new wave of giving and fresh ideas about what philanthropy can look like.

For charities, this moment represents more than a shift of assets – it’s a shift of values, priorities, and expectations that will reshape how people choose to give and the impact they want to make.

To engage this emerging generation, nonprofits should invest in storytelling that conveys tangible impact, optimizing mobile and digital experiences, emphasizing diversity and sustainability, and offering flexible giving options that align with individual passions and values.

Innovation is thriving across Africa – powered by local talent, creativity, and collaboration. Yet, many innovators still work in isolated hubs with limited opportunities to connect across borders.

For 15 years, AfriLabs has been bridging that gap. As a pan-African network supporting entrepreneurs and startups, AfriLabs strengthens innovation ecosystems through training, digital platforms, and cross-border collaboration.

With support from an unrestricted grant from a corporate donor, AfriLabs improved operational systems and sustained the skilled team behind AfriLabs’ regional programs, enabling them to expand their operations to 500 hubs across 53 countries. Their programs empower entrepreneurs with resources and connectivity to create startups and solutions that fit their communities.

The best intentions can fall short if they are not acted upon. Americans care about many different humanitarian issues at home and abroad, but that doesn’t mean they ultimately decide to donate. A variety of factors can come between their willing generosity and an actual donation.

The intention-action gap refers to the difference between what people say they’ll do (intention) and what they actually do (action). This gap can occur due to low motivation, distractions, poor planning, or thinking their actions won’t make a difference. But where there is a will, there’s a way.

Charities can help bridge this gap by simplifying the donation process, sending reminders, and clearly showing how donations make a difference. Understanding the barriers and designing smarter, more intuitive giving experiences, charities can turn fleeting intentions into lasting impact.

As $124 trillion flows to next-gen heirs, charities have an opportunity to appeal to young donors’ values through strategies that resonate with them.

Here are some strategies to invite meaningful engagement from this rising group of donors:
📣Share real-time impact to showcase your organization’s work and build trust and credibility.
📲Pew Research Center found that 27% of young adults in the U.S. are smart phone dependent, so optimize your website for mobile users, accounting for the audience likely to browse on their phones.
🕑Promote volunteering opportunities to highlight ways to support your cause with non-cash contributions.
🫂Create a community network to amplify your mission through passionate supporters who spread the word organically and drive sustained loyalty.

Since 1987, มูลนิธิ EDF - EDF Foundation has transformed lives in Thailand by breaking poverty's cycle through education — equipping rural and low-income youth with scholarships, life skills, and tools to build sustainable futures.

Since 2018, CAF America and our donors have supported 13 distinct projects across Thailand through over $526,000 in funding, equipping over 17,000 students with skills in finance, marketing and product design. Students have gone on to start and maintain their own businesses, creating products from herbal inhalers to date palm cookies.

From resume workshops to selling handmade products, these programs turn students into entrepreneurs who uplift their families and villages. We're proud to support a cause that sparks independence and creates ripple effects of good for generations to come.
