This year marks the 35th Anniversary of the American Inns of Court Pegasus Scholarship Program—a program that has become one of our most treasured international exchanges. For more than three decades, it has built bridges between our legal communities, strengthened our profession across borders, and fostered lifelong friendships grounded in shared values of ethics, professionalism, and excellence.

Since its founding, the Pegasus Scholarship has offered young American and British lawyers the opportunity to immerse themselves in each other’s legal systems, courts, and traditions. Many who have participated have gone on to become leaders—judges, barristers, advocates, scholars, and mentors who continue to enrich our profession.

The Pegasus Scholarship Trust was formed by the Right Honourable The Lord Goff in 1987 and has its office at Inner Temple. The Trust was established to allow young English barristers opportunities to travel abroad and young lawyers from other countries opportunities to travel to England to learn about each other’s legal systems. The Pegasus Trust scholarship program of the American Inns of Court allows young American Inn members to visit England for up to six weeks to observe and learn the English legal system, while their English counterparts spend a similar amount of time here in the United States learning our legal system.

The 2025 British Pegasus Scholars are:

Caleb Kirton is a barrister at Quadrant Chambers and member of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.

Alexandra Sutton (not in photo) is a barrister with the Government Legal Department and member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. Unfortunately, Alexandra was unable to join us this evening.

The 2024 American Inns of Court Pegasus Scholars are:

Stacey Burke is a senior Fulton County district attorney and member of the Judge Clarence Cooper American Inn of Court in Atlanta, Georgia.

Meg Glasmann is an associate at Jones Skelton & Hochuli and member of the David K. Watkiss-Sutherland II American Inn of Court in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Proud to see the lasting impact of the Pegasus Scholar network in action.

👏 2019 American Inns of Court Pegasus Scholar John J. Burke (Massachusetts)—now a barrister in London—recently hosted Judge Keven M. P. O’Grady and his wife, Gayle, during their visit to London.

Judge O’Grady serves on the Kansas Judicial Council, chairs the Kansas Supreme Court Child Support Advisory Committee, and is a member and former President of the Johnson County Family Law American Inn of Court in Olathe, Kansas.

Moments like these reflect the enduring professional and personal connections fostered through the Pegasus Scholar program. 🌍⚖️

A special highlight was reconnecting with 2022 Pegasus Scholar Caroline Merck, now co-president of the Boston American Inns of Court, who played a key role in coordinating British Scholar Alexandra Sutton’s placement. The photos perfectly captures the joy of reconnecting and celebrating together.

The 2025 British Pegasus Scholar Alexandra Sutton has just completed her placement with the Boston American Inn of Court!

Her visit included an engaging mix of legal experiences and local sightseeing.

Pictures include the following highlights:

1) On a duck tour exploring the many waterways of Boston. The city’s beloved fleet of duck boats are replicas of the “DUKW” vehicles were built by General Motors during WWII to transport troops and supplies from ships to land. Soldiers nicknamed them "Ducks" because of their amphibious capabilities.

2) Enjoying the Boston skyline at the University of Massachusetts Club.

3) Exploring the Witch Trials Museum in Salem, MA.

4) Grabbing a slice at an iconic pizzeria in Harvard Square.

5) At Veteran’s Day event at the Old North Church and Historical Site with His Majesty’s Counsel General David Clay MBE and Caroline Merck

6) Learning about Foley Hoag’s prestigious commercial litigation and sovereign states practice groups in the Boston Seaport.

7) Engaging in transatlantic conversations at the November meeting of the Alan D. Lourie IP Inn of Court and the Boston American Inn of Court. Special thanks to Judge Gloria Tan, Judge Lisa Grant and Judge David Breen of the Boston Municipal Court.

😎 Spending the afternoon with Judge George O’Toole at the Federal Courthouse.

Current President Caroline Merck shared:
"The Boston Inn of Court loved having Alexandra in town these past few days and at its meeting last night. She is a wonderful scholar, a true ambassador of British culture and legal traditions, and a charming guest!"

Thank you, Alexandra, for bringing your insight and enthusiasm to Boston! 🇬🇧⚖️

Bridging Legal Traditions Across the Pond

On Thursday, the Vassar B. Carlton American Inn of Court (VBC) had the honor of accompanying 2025 British Pegasus Scholar Alexandra Sutton to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Judges Kelly McKibben and Laura Moody, along with VBC President-Elect Jeanine Allen and Treasurer Tiffany Troutt, joined Alexandra for a memorable morning with Judge John Antoon, a founding member and past president of the VBC Inn.

Judge Antoon shared the rich history of the Middle District and his personal connection to the Inn. Alexandra also had the opportunity to observe a federal sentencing hearing—an insightful moment in her comparative legal journey.

Following the court visit, Baker Hostetler graciously hosted a luncheon with members of the Federal Bar Association and the George C. Young Inn of Court, including Judges Antoon and Senior Judge Roy Dalton.

The highlight of the afternoon was a dynamic panel moderated by Dan Eckhart, where Alexandra eloquently compared the British and American legal systems, drawing from her immersive experiences across Florida courts.

Special thanks to Lindsey Macmillan, law clerk to U.S. Magistrate Judge Nathan Hill, and Jill Davis, FBA President-Elect, for their exceptional coordination—especially in securing an alternate venue amid the government shutdown.

This day exemplified the spirit of international legal exchange and the enduring bonds between our Inns of Court.
