More Than a Ride: A Helping Hand Right Outside Your Door.

For many of us, a home is more than a place—it’s a reflection of the life we’ve built and the memories we’ve created. At AHA, we want our members to continue enjoying their homes and outdoor spaces with confidence.

For 15 years, AHA volunteers have been happy to lend a hand with outdoor help that makes a big difference—clearing snow and leaves, pulling weeds, trimming bushes, and helping with seasonal yard cleanup.

These tasks may become more challenging over time, but our volunteers are ready to step in—not because it’s a chore, but because they enjoy being part of the community and helping their neighbors.

So if your yard needs a little extra care, don’t hesitate to reach out. An AHA volunteer would be happy to help keep your outdoor space welcoming, safe, and beautiful.

This gathering is about more than sharing a meal — it’s about creating a space where solo agers can meet others walking a similar path, talk openly about the questions that matter, and think ahead together about how we can support one another through life’s transitions.

From building connections to exploring real solutions for the future, this group is intentionally creating a community where no one has to figure it all out alone.

More than a helping hand. A partner in creating a home that works for you.

For 15 years, At Home in Alexandria, has shown we understand the value of home. We believe that staying in the home you love also means feeling comfortable, safe, and supported in that space.

Our volunteers are ready to help members with the everyday projects that can sometimes feel overwhelming—organizing paperwork, sorting office files, decluttering a room, creating order in kitchen cabinets, or assisting with downsizing and reducing clutter.

Sometimes it’s not about doing a big project all at once. It’s about having a trusted neighbor by your side to make the process easier, more manageable, and even enjoyable.

And our volunteers are happy to help. They value the opportunity to spend time with members, share their skills, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of their neighbors.

So if there’s a space in your home that needs a little attention, don’t hesitate to ask. AHA volunteers are here to help you create a home that continues to support the way you want to live.

"I am a former Army Arabic linguist and getting a second degree in gerontology. My wife and I met in the Army, and we have two cats, Meat and Tisa. I enjoy cooking, board and video games, and have a 421-day reading streak on my Kindle app. I look forward to getting to know the AHA community.I am eager to say yes to your requests! From giving rides to caring for your pets to hosting a few events, I can’t wait to help and support events, I can’t wait to help and support the members of AHA."

For 15 years, At Home in Alexandria has been walking alongside older Alexandrians—helping our members live safe, active, and connected lives in the place they call home.

While transportation is an important part of what we do, our volunteers offer so much more than a ride from one place to another. They offer companionship, encouragement, and a friendly face ready to share life’s everyday moments.

Did you know AHA members can request a volunteer to join them for a walk around the neighborhood? Whether it’s a stroll to enjoy the fresh air, a chance to get moving, or simply time spent connecting with a neighbor, our volunteers are ready to walk beside you—literally.

Because at AHA, we believe aging in place is about more than staying in your home. It’s about staying connected to the people and community that make it feel like home.

For 15 years, At Home in Alexandria has been in a positioning of understanding. Here's what we understand! We know that staying connected is one of the most important parts of aging well. That’s why our volunteers are here for more than errands and assistance—they’re here for conversation, companionship, and meaningful moments.

Many of our members may not realize that requesting a friendly visit is not a burden—it is something our volunteers genuinely enjoy and welcome. They love the opportunity to sit down, share a conversation, hear your stories, laugh together, and build the neighborly connections that make our community special.

Whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee, talking about a favorite book, sharing memories, or simply having someone stop by to say hello, a friendly visit can brighten the day for both the member and the volunteer.

On this International Day of Friendship, we're celebrating the connections that make At Home in Alexandria so much more than an organization. They make us a community.

Friendships are at the heart of what we do. They begin with a shared cup of coffee, a walk through the neighborhood, a ride to an appointment, a volunteer lending a helping hand, or simply taking the time to check in. Over time, those small moments grow into meaningful relationships built on kindness, trust, laughter, and support.

To our members, volunteers, caregivers, and friends—thank you for showing up for one another every day. You remind us that aging in place doesn't mean going it alone. It means being surrounded by people who care, who connect, and who become like family.
