At Home in Alexandria (AHA) helps older adults age safely and independently in the homes and community they love.

Through volunteer-driven transportation, social programs, and practical support, AHA fosters connection, independence, and social well-being. AHA is a non-profit membership organization that provides the social, emotional and practical support older adults need to "age in community" and in the home they love. In addition to social and educational events, group outings, and activity-centered clubs, AHA volunteers provide transportation to appointments, store and events, handyman services, IT/computer help, friendly visits, home organization, and other in-home assistance.

AHA Member Spotlight 🌟

Meet one of our wonderful new AHA members, who has called Alexandria home for 40 years!

Sylvia Linke is a lifelong public servant, animal lover, and passionate storyteller, she continues to stay active and engaged in her community through volunteer leadership, her church, and storytelling performances at her condominium.

As a solo ager, she also treasures the close relationship she shares with her three siblings.

Syliva hails from the west end of Alexandria. We’re grateful to have her as part of the AHA community and love hearing the stories, experiences, and perspectives that make our members so special.

Volunteers sign up because they want to make a difference. It’s our job as villages to help them do just that!

At Tuesday’s WAVE Conference, At Home in Alexandria’s very own Tegan Cohen moderated an important conversation among DMV Villages: Beyond the Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet.

The session challenged villages to think beyond simply recruiting volunteers and instead, consider how we can help volunteers journey from interest to impact.

Because a volunteer’s journey shouldn’t end when they check a box on a sign-up sheet. That's where it begins.

When we understand what motivates our volunteers, connect their passions and skills to meaningful opportunities, and support them along the way, we create stronger volunteers, stronger villages, and stronger communities.

Bravo, Tegan, for facilitating such a vital conversation and helping villages think differently about the power of volunteerism! 👏

Death is something we all share, yet it can be one of the hardest things to talk about.

But there can be power in having these conversations before we’re faced with loss. Talking openly can help us feel less alone, better understand ourselves and others, and find connection in something that touches every human life.

Join At Home in Alexandria for our Understanding Grief Educational Series, exploring grief, loss, and how we can support ourselves and one another. The series concludes with a Death Café, an open conversation about mortality and making the most of our lives.

You don’t have to be grieving to participate. Come with curiosity and an open mind.

Today, AHA members and community members gathered for Roadmap to Downsizing with Pete Crouch, Seniors Real Estate Specialist, to learn how to approach downsizing with preparation, intention, and a vision for the road ahead.

From understanding the key decisions involved in downsizing to learning about helpful resources, move teams, and what to consider before selling a home, the conversation was all about turning a potentially overwhelming process into a thoughtful plan.

One attendee captured the mindset beautifully:

💬 “I love the mindset of looking at this whole process to clear my space today so I can go forward and look ahead.”

That’s what planning ahead can do—it can help make room not just in your home, but for what comes next.
