70 volunteers. 270 pounds of trash. A whole lot of invasive plants removed! 🌿💪

Together, we collected 270 pounds of trash and tackled invasive Japanese knotweed, English ivy, mugwort, and Japanese switchgrass.

A special shoutout to Cub Scout Pack 873 of Annandale for showing up and helping make a difference on the trail! 👏

The Mount Vernon Trail. It is an 18.5-mile ribbon that stretches from the shaded sanctuary of Theodore Roosevelt Island all the way to George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. On a clear day, when the sun catches the Potomac, the water glistens and shimmers, opening up majestic views across the river where it feels like you can see forever. Flanked by lush hardwoods and tidal marshland, this tranquil corridor offers a front-row seat to the capital skyline—a serene green oasis running right along the water’s edge into Alexandria.

Yesterday, October 8, this crown jewel of the region—boasting approximately one million users annually—was inducted into the Rails to Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame. Over the summer, thousands of supporters helped decide which trail would earn the top honor. This coveted list recognizes America’s most outstanding multi-use trails.

Traffic on the George Washington Memorial Parkway just south of Fort Hunt Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The lane closures will remain in place 24 hours a day for approximately four weeks. Motorists should expect delays, allow extra travel time, and seek alternate routes particularly during periods of heavy traffic.

Crews need to close lanes to repair a severe bump in the road that poses a safety risk to drivers.

The obstruction is on the southern section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, just south of Fort Hunt Road and approximately 1,300 feet north of River Farm Drive.

The lane closures extend about 0.4 mile in each direction from the bump and affect only this section of the parkway.

One northbound lane and one southbound lane will remain closed around the clock during construction. One lane will remain open in each direction.
