Community Lodgings' mission is to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence and

Community Lodgings was founded in 1987 and purchased five apartment buildings with help from eight churches in Alexandria. These Affordable Housing units currently house 34 low-income families and are home to an average of 12 homeless families each year, who participate in the organization’s Transition in Place Housing Program. While in the program, transitional families are provided intensive cas

e management, subsidized housing, family therapy, job counseling, budget mentoring, and child services, among other assistance. The program goal is for these families to become self-sufficient within two years. To further promote and address the mission of self-sufficiency, Community Lodgings provides Youth Education Programs (YEP) at two Learning Centers for families in transitional housing, the working poor living in the Arlandria community and the compromised families living in Alexandria’s west end community of Brent Place. The program provides academic and behavioral support for 163 school age children four days per week. On average, children receive 210 hours of support per year through evening tutoring sessions, academic workshops and mentoring activities to promote healthy attitudes and conflict resolution. YEP also offers workshops and support to the families, providing a comprehensive program teaching the parents how to be an empowered adult and positively affect their children’s lives. The goal of the Youth Education Program is to prepare the next generation for self-sufficiency.

Girls in our Youth Education Program experienced the magic of Spitfire Camp this summer and we couldn't be more grateful for the partnership that made it possible!

From registration to transportation, our team worked hand-in-hand with camp organizers to make sure every girl who wanted to participate was able to do so. Literally getting them there was a team effort and it was worth every bit of it. 💛

Our students had an amazing field trip to the Playground at the National Building Museum, a one-of-a-kind space where play, creativity, and architecture come together! The Playground is designed to inspire children to climb, build, explore, imagine, and move. From the giant foam blocks and oversized structures to the climbing areas, slides, and interactive spaces, every part of the playground encourages hands-on discovery and creative play. 🧱🛝🏗️

Our students had the opportunity to challenge themselves physically, work together, use their imaginations, and explore a space that turns learning into an unforgettable experience. There was no shortage of laughter, teamwork, curiosity, and BIG smiles! ❤️

Field trips like this remind us that some of the best learning happens when children are given the freedom to play, explore, and discover the world around them. What an incredible day at the National Building Museum! 🎉

We couldn't be prouder! 🎉 We celebrated Shelli at The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce 40 Over 40 Class of 2026 awards ceremony, honoring her as part of this special recognition for accomplished leaders whose wisdom, experience, and long-term impact are helping shape and strengthen Alexandria!

☀️ Summer Camp has been packed with learning, laughter, and adventure!

Campers strengthened their reading and math skills while enjoying swimming once a week with a swim instructor, art, sports, free play, STEM activities, educational games, and more! 🎨🏊‍♀️🧩
Our weekly field trips took campers to the Museum of the American Latino, LEGO Discovery Center, National Building Museum, and Scramble Parkour. 🚌✨

We’ve wrapped up elementary camp and are excited to welcome 12 middle school students for two more weeks of learning and fun!

💙 There’s nothing like coming together as a community. Thank you to everyone who joined us for National Night Out! It was an evening filled with conversation, connection, laughter, and the opportunity to strengthen relationships with our neighbors and community partners.

We're grateful to have shared the evening alongside organizations and local businesses that are committed to making Alexandria a stronger, healthier, and more connected community, including the Department of Human Services – Office of Community Services, Alexandria Health Department, ALIVE, Silver Diner, DJ Maricela Aguilar, Florentina Lopez Vasquez with Artisanal Guatemalan Ice Cream, and New Brookside Apartments. We also received a special visit from the Alexandria Chief of Police and City Manager’s and City Attorney’s Offices!

Building thriving communities takes all of us. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared a conversation, and helped make the evening so meaningful. We look forward to continuing this work together.

☀️ Summer Camp is in full swing! Elementary School student camp ended last week and middle school students are in camp this week!

We are so grateful for amazing camp partners like Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, who brought two weeks of creativity, learning, and fun to our students through camp facilitation and volunteer support. From tie-dyeing shirts and balloon races to marshmallow spaghetti towers, building competitions, arts and crafts, and literacy activities, our students had the opportunity to learn, explore, and make unforgettable summer memories! 📚💡

There's more! In addition to Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, heartfelt gratitude to all of our Summer Camp partners and providers to include, Grace Episcopal Church Alexandria VA, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alexandria City Public Schools, Alexandria Summer Youth Employment Program, ALIVE, Cake4Kids of Northern Virginia and New Brookside Apartments. We continue to extend our gratitude and open arms to to Ms. LaNae W., Taco Bell King Street and Taco Bell Foundation, and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Crew for field trip experiences!
