This Mother’s Day weekend, we celebrate the gift of life and those who nurture it — including those who support new moms. San Antonio Birth Doulas, a program of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc., started in 1999 serving pregnant women — especially teens and low-income women, who sought to have a healthy delivery experience — with compassion, research-based education and culturally responsive support. This spring, as the result of a collaborative project between CCUSA and Catholic Charities San Antonio, the first-ever cohort of graduates from the National Community Doula Certification Program, representing 9 Catholic Charities agencies, completed a 100-hour course aimed at addressing a crucial gap in maternal and infant health. According to one participant, "My doula certification equipped me with the knowledge and skills to support mothers emotionally, physically, and mentally throughout pregnancy and birth." Congratulations to the graduates!
