The 2026 theme is “Rural Women Caring for Mother Nature” to honor the work rural women do every day. Rural women lack access to education, healthcare, land rights, and sanitation. Much of their work remains unpaid and invisible.

But rural women:
🌍️ Conserve seeds
🌎️ Protect biodiversity
🌏️ Manage water
🌍️ Restore degraded land

Yet only 10% of national agriculture policy advisors are women. And women hold 15% of senior positions in national agricultural ministries.

Rural women provide food and protect the environment. We call on rural women to have equal access to public services and resources. We urge the participation of rural women in their local communities and national leadership.

Koldo Casla, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, recently concluded his 12-day visit to Ghana. Due to widespread unaffordable housing and forced evictions in the country, he urged the Ghanaian government to help increase housing affordability and to protect people from forced evictions.

The theme for 2026 is “Resilience Starts at Home,” recognizing that the home is the place not only most often affected by disasters, but also where resilience begins. No one should ever have to choose between an affordable home and a safe one.

By understanding the local disaster risks, households can make sure information reaches everyone. Knowledge of what to do in an emergency provides power towards resilience.

What can you do to help reduce disaster risk?

🌐 Understand local hazards, risk, and vulnerabilities, seeking information from credible sources, and sharing with all household members.

🌐 Become familiar with early warning systems

🌐 Buy home/renters’ insurance, if available, and explore public or community-based assistance programs.

🌐 Improve household preparedness by maintaining emergency supplies and developing family emergency plans

🌐 Advocate locally for risk-informed housing, infrastructure, and preparedness systems.

US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, announced plans to livestream the ex*****on by firing squad of Nidal Malik Hasan. Hasan, a former soldier, was convicted of a shooting spree in Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, and sentenced to death. The United Nations Human Rights Office claims that livestreaming the ex*****on violates prohibition on torture.

If undertaken, the US would join the ranks of Afghanistan and Iran, the only two other countries to have carried out verified public ex*****ons in recent years. Unverified reports of public ex*****ons in recent years have occurred in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, and Somalia.

Unfortunately, attacks and rights violations against health workers remain far-reaching. Globally, health workers face targeted violent attacks and threats.

Extreme heat can cause severe health issues and contribute to feelings of dehumanization. This lawsuit succeeded in large part due to the advocacy of currently and formerly incarcerated people themselves, demonstrating the power of their voices to make change.
