June 19th is International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict and commemorates the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1820, which condemns sexual violence as a tactic of war. Conflict-related sexual violence is used to forcibly displace, instill fear, and assert control over communities. It often goes unreported due to social stigma and other barriers to documenting sexual violence.

Twenty years after Nepal’s Comprehensive Peace Accord, transitional justice remains stalled. Despite commissions and laws, over 63,000 complaints of killings, torture, and disappearances remain unresolved.

Victims continue to wait for truth, accountability, and rehabilitation. The Supreme Court of Nepal has addressed gaps in justice and focused on safeguarding the rights of conflict victims, but much more work remains.

On June 15th, the UK Court of Appeal ruled that the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organization was lawful under the Terrorism Act 2000, overturning an earlier High Court ruling. This has raised concerns about the use of counter-terrorism law against direct-action protest groups, with civil liberties organizations criticizing the ruling and noting that it risks further criminalization of protests.

HRRC denounces the excessive use of counter-terrorism powers against protest movements, which risk criminalizing peaceful expression, public dissent, and activism. We urge states not to use national security law to restrict lawful protests or reduce them to terrorism offenses.

Today we recognize the need to counter hate speech, xenophobia, and discrimination. Hate speech sits at the beginning of the path to dehumanization. It is often a precursor to worsening violence, including atrocity crimes, and is a tool used to divide. Hate speech targets minority groups such as women, migrants, refugees, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities, people of other races. HRRC joins the UN in urging all individuals and organizations to combat hate speech and say .

The murder of 12 protestors and injury to dozens of others highlights the ongoing violence in the area and the lack of protection for civilians.

In a new publication, HRRC’s Lena Abara focuses on the impacts of oil extraction in Yasuní National Park on the Tagaeri-Taromenane Indigenous peoples in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian government has failed to comply with provisions made to protect the Tagaeri-Taromenane. This has ignited a broader discussion of the protection of Indigenous rights worldwide, especially as they continue to face significant violence and discrimination.
