Happy Friday, May 29, 2026 Everybody! It should be an exciting, fun, and beautifully sunny weekend in downtown Akron! Here are some ideas for how to enjoy it:

1️⃣ The Knight Stage at the Akron Civic Theatre is hosting 4 shows (2 on Friday, and 2 on Saturday) for the 2nd Annual Comedy Jam in Akron. This can’t-miss comedy experience celebrates stand-up at its best—featuring a stacked lineup of local favorites and rising national talent. Headlining this year’s Comedy Jam is the hilarious Sydney Castillo, whose razor-sharp wit and infectious energy have lit up stages on Wild ’N Out, HBO, and Comedy Central. 2️⃣ Live music choices are blossoming all over the place this weekend!

Lock 3 Akron, Ohio hosts Nikki D and the Sisters of Thunder with Jul Big Green today, Friday, May 29, for a free show, at 7 pm. On Saturday, enjoy the music of The Labra Brothers with Run Katie Run, also free, at 7 pm.

Just a few feet away from Lock 3, the Akron Civic Theatre hosts Party on the PNC Plaza prior to the Friday show at Lock 3, featuring the music of Coalesce, from 6 - 7 pm.

3️⃣ On Saturday, The National Center for Choreography - Akron presents Work in Process: Angelina Ramirez & Carlos Menchaca at Guzzetta Hall from 5 - 6 pm. Flamenco artists, choreographers / dancers Ramirez (Tucson, AZ) and Menchaca (Albuquerque, NM) explore alternative flamenco creation processes at the intersection of tradition and innovation, combining technical virtuosity and contemporary research through movement and music. Free & open to all.

ALSO on Saturday, Curated Storefront & Akron Soul Train host an opening reception for the new Ian Brill immersive installation "Inflection" from 5 - 7 pm at Outside the Box (across the parking lot from Luigi's). Inflection is an immersive audiovisual experience developed by Pittsburgh-based interactive and multisensory artist Ian Brill with musical accompaniment by Akron jazz musician Theron Brown. It's a truly unique experience—Don't Miss It. Get a DORA drink from Jilly's Music Room, and join the party.

AND, Akron Art Museum hosts the Cleveland Ballet in the Bud & Susie Rogers Garden on Sat. from 7 - 9 pm. It's an enchanting evening on the lawn that celebrates the spirit of Northeast Ohio with excerpts from Swan Lake. Tickets are available: https://www.cleveballet.org/akron-art

Lookin’ for something to do on this fine Thursday evening? Allow us to make a few recommendations:

⭐ It’s Thursday, which means admission to the Akron Art Museum is FREE! Memberships are also 25% off. In addition to a free After School Studio for the kiddos today, be sure to check out the incredible exhibitions on display—Kent Monkman’s History Is Painted by the Victors, Transfiguration: Rachel Libeskind and the Tifany Window, and Jess T. Dugan’s I Want You to Know My Story. Open 12 – 9 pm.

⭐ A couple things are happening at Baxter's Speakeasy tonight: On the patio of the speakeasy and High St. Hop House, it’s Reggae Night with DJ Maxafari from 7 to 10 pm. Inside the speakeasy, it’s the Speakeasy Sessions: Akron’s Queerest Open Mic. Bring your music, poetry, comedy, theater, and art to share, or simply enjoy a craft cocktail and watch. Starts at 8 pm.

⭐ There are movies to see tonight: At the Akron-Summit County Public Library, you can catch a free showing of Drop (2025) at 6:15 pm, and at The Nightlight, they’ve got I Love Boosters (6:10 pm), Obsession (5:30 & 7:45 pm), and Is God Is (8:30 pm).

Since 2013, Jilly's Music Room has been hosting local, regional, and national bands from just about every genre from indie to hip-hop, from to rock and singer/songwriter to jazz. Located in the Northside District, Jilly’s also hosts other live entertainment, like karaoke, Metamorphosets, movie screenings, drink & draws, and more.

Better come hungry—the venue boasts a full bar, a full-service kitchen that is 100% gluten-free, and table service. They also offer BRUNCH on most weekends from 11 am to 3 pm, often spiced up with live music to boot. With entertainment four nights a week, there’s always fun to be had at Jilly’s Music Room.

Kabylia Baguette is an artisan bakery located inside Bounce Innovation Hub. Owned by wife and husband pair Hilary and Nourdine, Kabylia Baguette serves up a variety of breads and pastries. 🧘 Yoga on the Canal at The Mustill Store (Wednesday, May 27, 9 – 9:45 am): Join yoga instructor Deneen Wittlinger for a mid-week moment of Zen. Families are welcome; bring your own mat or towel.

🎤 The Speakeasy Sessions: Akron’s Queerest Open Mic at Baxter's Speakeasy (Thursday, May 28, 8 pm – close): Bring your music, poetry, theater, art, and creativity to share in community with others. The fun begins at 8, but feel free to show up whenever you can.

🎸 Ceci Taylor Tour Kickoff at Jilly's Music Room (Friday, May 29, 8 pm): Northeast Ohio singer/songwriter Ceci Taylor is bringing her catchy pop-rock sound to Jilly’s as she kicks off her tour. She’ll be joined by Hansen Risley and the Riley Burke Band. Doors 7 pm.

💃 Work in Process: Angelina Ramirez & Carlos Menchaca at Guzzetta Recital Hall (Saturday, May 30, 5 – 6 pm): Join The National Center for Choreography - Akron for this work-in-process showing featuring flamenco artists, choreographers, and dancers Angelina Ramirez and Carlos Menchaca, as they explore alternative flamenco creation processes in their work, The Spider, The Venom, and the Bitten.

👟 Line Dancing on the Plaza at Cascade Plaza (Sunday, May 31, 3 – 4 pm): Carmen Payne from JustUs Line Dance Crew is leading a weekly outdoor class that’s free to attend. All levels of experience are welcome!

🫏 Shrek 25th Anniversary at The Nightlight (Monday, June 1, 5:30 pm): The years started coming and they didn’t stop coming, and somehow this beloved film featuring everyone’s favorite ogre and donkey is 25 years old. Bring the whole family to see it at The Nightlight.

🎷 “BLU-esday Tuesday” Blues Jam at BLU Jazz+ (Tuesday, June 2, 7 pm): Bring your instruments and join Northeast Ohio blues musicians John Markovic, Ryan Neuman, and Erik Diaz for this biweekly jam session. Free admission.

☀️ This should be a fantastic week to enjoy LUNCH outside! Fortuitously, tomorrow, Wednesday, May 27 is the start of Midday On Main, a weekly lunchtime concert by an amazing local musician. From noon to 1:30 pm, enjoy your lunch at Lock 3 Akron, Ohio (or at Cascade Plaza on select dates) and take in some great music.

We've got Anna Beau Music to start the series tomorrow.
