Happy Juneteenth!
In observance of this important day, the International Institute of Akron will be closed today and will reopen on Monday, June 22.
As we commemorate the end of slavery for all enslaved people in the United States, we encourage those who have the day off to take time for reflection, learning, meaningful conversations, and action toward building a more just and equitable future for all.
Looking to deepen your understanding of Black history, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom? Here are a few books and films we recommend:
📖 The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois
A foundational work that explores life after emancipation and the concept of "double consciousness." Du Bois offers powerful historical insight and emotional depth, illuminating how African Americans have navigated a society shaped by systemic barriers.
📖 Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Written as a letter to his son, Coates reflects on inherited trauma, identity, and the realities of being Black in America, offering a poignant examination of race and belonging.
📖 The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel reimagines the Underground Railroad as a literal subterranean train, following a young woman's courageous journey toward freedom while exploring themes of resistance, hope, and survival.
🎬 Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom (2022, PBS)
This documentary explores the history and significance of Juneteenth through the eyes of a Black man learning about the holiday from descendants of those who were liberated on that historic day.
🎬 13th (2016, Netflix)
A powerful documentary that examines the intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States, tracing the legacy of slavery through modern systems and policies.
Today, we honor the generations who fought for freedom, celebrate the resilience and contributions of Black Americans, and recommit ourselves to the work that still lies ahead.
