The Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center

The Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center The Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children's Hospital aims to enhance the quality of life A terminal diagnosis is not required.

Pediatric palliative care focuses on children, prenatal to young adult, with complex, chronic or serious conditions and their families, enhancing quality of life in partnership with cure-directed care. Our specialized team of providers includes:pediatric palliative care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurse case managers, social workers, bereavement coordinator, a chaplain, child life spe

cialists, expressive, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, a dietitian and trained volunteers. This team works in collaboration with your child’s other health care providers and specialists, helping to provide seamless care coordination and communication, and aiding you in making informed choices about difficult medical decisions. Palliative care patients receive comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to control pain and other symptoms. Your child receives support for emotional, psychological, practical, spiritual, educational and developmental issues which may contribute to suffering or interfere with healing. Care is customized for each patient and family, by allowing you to choose from a variety of available services, according to your needs. When a child faces a chronic condition or a serious illness, families often feel as if life has become a roller coaster ride. Palliative care is here to provide support along the journey, no matter what the outcome may be. Even if your child is in a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit, or in an acute care setting, she can benefit from the pain control, symptom management, care coordination, or additional family support offered through our program. We care for children with both cancer and non-cancer diagnoses such as leukodystrophy, congenital heart disease, cerebral palsy and mitochondrial disease. We have found our care to be most beneficial when we begin the journey with the family at the time of diagnosis and continue with them for as long as they may need. Our team would like to share the incredible honor given to our longtime volunteer, Nancy Ludwick. Nancy was recognized by Busch Funeral and Crematory Services for her selflessness when caring for families who have experienced the end-of-life for a loved one. She is a retired nurse, volunteers for our palliative care grief support groups, makes phone calls to bereaved families hoping to guide them through their most difficult loss and so much more. Thank you, Nancy, and congratulations on this incredible and well-deserved honor.

Register Now for Energized Toward Healing beginning August 13, 2026:
We invite parents who have lost a child to participate in our Thursday evening parent grief support series. Our hope is that the information and support from other parents will help to energize you toward healing. We know that every parent's experience with grief is different, but we want to offer other sources of experience and empathy to help along the way. Sharing our stories, our concerns, our issues and our adversity is one of the ways people have helped each other through grief. Coming together with other parents who have been there allows us the possibility of learning from each other. Of course, no one who attends is required to talk.

The group meets every other week for eight sessions from 7-9:00pm. This is a closed group designed to help create a community for bereaved parents only. We ask participants to commit to attending all eight sessions. Registration is required and there is no fee for this program. Scan the QR Code, click the link or contact Denise Zehner at [email protected].
