The Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children's Hospital aims to enhance the quality of life A terminal diagnosis is not required.

Pediatric palliative care focuses on children, prenatal to young adult, with complex, chronic or serious conditions and their families, enhancing quality of life in partnership with cure-directed care. Our specialized team of providers includes:pediatric palliative care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurse case managers, social workers, bereavement coordinator, a chaplain, child life specialists, expressive, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, a dietitian and trained volunteers. This team works in collaboration with your child’s other health care providers and specialists, helping to provide seamless care coordination and communication, and aiding you in making informed choices about difficult medical decisions. Palliative care patients receive comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to control pain and other symptoms. Your child receives support for emotional, psychological, practical, spiritual, educational and developmental issues which may contribute to suffering or interfere with healing. Care is customized for each patient and family, by allowing you to choose from a variety of available services, according to your needs. When a child faces a chronic condition or a serious illness, families often feel as if life has become a roller coaster ride. Palliative care is here to provide support along the journey, no matter what the outcome may be. Even if your child is in a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit, or in an acute care setting, she can benefit from the pain control, symptom management, care coordination, or additional family support offered through our program. We care for children with both cancer and non-cancer diagnoses such as leukodystrophy, congenital heart disease, cerebral palsy and mitochondrial disease. We have found our care to be most beneficial when we begin the journey with the family at the time of diagnosis and continue with them for as long as they may need. This session will examine the emotional, social and developmental impacts of caregiving and bereavement on siblings, highlighting common challenges and often overlooked needs. Dr. Weaver and Dr. Wiener will also introduce bibliotherapy as a practical tool to help siblings process grief and normalize emotions.

Camp Quality Ohio Family Camp is October 2-4, 2026! One weekend this fall is time to trade waiting rooms for campfires. Family Camp welcomes kids with cancer, in treatment or remission, and their whole family. to relax, recharge and connect with families who get it. Camp is no charge for kids with cancer and their families who love them.
Due to limited space, all families who register will be on a waitlist and notified of their secured spot by September 14, 2026.

Register Now for Good Mourning beginning September 22, 2026:
Our six-week Good Mourning Support Group is designed to help children and their parents understand and deal with feelings of grief resulting from the death of a loved one. Sessions are led by trained Akron Children's Hospital and community professionals. Our grief support program is open to children (developmentally over the age of 5), teens and families. Our team provides expressive activities and professionally led discussion focusing on ways to cope with grief.

The group meets every week for six sessions from 6:15-8:00pm. This is a closed group designed to help create a community for bereaved families only. We ask participants to commit to attending all six sessions. Registration is required and there is no fee for this program.
