Akron Press Club

The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals.

The group has a rich heritage of bringing local and national newsmakers together to discuss compelling issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations students and sponsors annual fundraising and community outreach events. Members of the Akron Press Club are journalists, communicators a

nd public relations professionals, and frequently news makers themselves. The Akron Press Club represents the area’s only association whose membership encompasses all communications fields. This powerful network includes professionals from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, public relations, business and nonprofit communications, education, business and government. Club members benefit from opportunities to exchange ideas, hear provocative speakers, participate in professional development opportunities and attend interesting social events. The Akron Press Club is an open forum that respects the rights of free speech and press. Speakers are expected to take questions from the audience after their formal remarks. Recording of Akron Press Club events by the media or public is permitted; recording rights may be restricted only at the discretion of the Akron Press Club Board.

On your mark, get set, go! Race on over to Derby Downs with the Akron Press Club! Join us for a special event at the Soap Box Derby on June 30, 2026.

The event will feature remarks from Dennis VanFossen Jr., president and CEO of Soap Box Derby, just weeks ahead of the 88th annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. Attendees will also have the chance to race down the derby hill!

Tickets are $35 and include admission and boxed lunch. Attendees can pay $10 more to ride down the derby hill.

We'll kick off the night with a behind-the-scenes tour of 7 17 Credit Union Park before cheering on the Akron RubberDucks as they take on the Altoona Curve. Then relax on the Tiki Terrace with reserved seating near the Tiki Bar and enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet throughout the game.

Maple Heights Mayor Annette Blackwell will speak about her campaign and priorities for the state. Blackwell made history as the first female and Black mayor of Maple Heights and brings extensive experience in both public service and the private sector.

These events are an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates in a thoughtful, nonpartisan forum hosted by the Akron Press Club.
