Akron Press Club The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals.

The group has a rich heritage of bringing local and national newsmakers together to discuss compelling issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations students and sponsors annual fundraising and community outreach events. Members of the Akron Press Club are journalists, communicators a

nd public relations professionals, and frequently news makers themselves. The Akron Press Club represents the area’s only association whose membership encompasses all communications fields. This powerful network includes professionals from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, public relations, business and nonprofit communications, education, business and government. Club members benefit from opportunities to exchange ideas, hear provocative speakers, participate in professional development opportunities and attend interesting social events. The Akron Press Club is an open forum that respects the rights of free speech and press. Speakers are expected to take questions from the audience after their formal remarks. Recording of Akron Press Club events by the media or public is permitted; recording rights may be restricted only at the discretion of the Akron Press Club Board.

This year marks the end of an era at Akron’s iconic Firestone Country Club. As the Senior Players Championship moves to California next year – leaving Firestone without a tournament for the first time since the Rubber City Open in 1954 – questions remain about the future of professional golf in Akron. Aside from bringing in millions of spectators, the PGA Tour’s presence in the city was a driver for more than $34 million in charitable giving.

Join the Akron Press Club for a luncheon featuring remarks from Danielle Robertson Thompson, Executive Director of the Northern Ohio Golf & Charities Foundation.

Thompson will discuss how the foundation plans to transition its tournament volunteers and donors to other community initiatives and charity outings. She’ll also share how the organization will continue to work alongside Firestone on new ways to celebrate Akron's golf legacy. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.

Time: Doors open at 11 a.m. Lunch begins at 11:30. Speech begins at noon, followed by questions from the audience.
Place: 1201 East Market St. Akron, OH, 44305. The entrance is located a few doors down from Eighty-Three Brewery, in the former Goodyear Hall space.

Curious about the goings-on of Cuyahoga Valley National Park?

Join the Akron Press Club for a luncheon featuring remarks from Greg Peckham, CEO of Conservancy for CVNP, on July 29, 2026 at East End.

Peckham just reached one year as CEO of the Conservancy, the philanthropic funding engine behind the national park. The Conservancy is the nonprofit strategic partner to CVNP, responsible for developing projects, programs, and experiences to serve more than 3.1 million annual visitors to the park.

Peckham will share updates about ongoing projects, park improvements and takeaways from his first year as CEO.

Tickets are $35 and include admission and lunch. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.

On your mark, get set, go! Race on over to Derby Downs with the Akron Press Club! Join us for a special event at the Soap Box Derby on June 30, 2026.

The event will feature remarks from Dennis VanFossen Jr., president and CEO of Soap Box Derby, just weeks ahead of the 88th annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. Attendees will also have the chance to race down the derby hill!

Tickets are $35 and include admission and boxed lunch. Attendees can pay $10 more to ride down the derby hill.
